Also frequently used by bewildered, but supportive partners watching their loved one vacillate between two different covers of the same book … the more experienced don’t stand up the first time the words “I’ll get this one” are spoken! 😂

Over 30 an appointment is a good idea as it saves you having to wait - but given you are wandering around a bookshop, I am not sure that is too much of a hardship!
If you would like to book, you can DM me with your name & number and Secondhand will give you a call!

One of the finest opening lines in contemporary literature.
'Leonard was raised by his mother alone with cheerfully concealed difficulty, his father having died tragically during childbirth.'

Totally agree. third spaces are essential, more than ever before, to counter the ‘atomisation’ of our communities. We need more than the pub. Third spaces foster human connection, meaning, help to re-create a sense of belonging. An alternative to online life and busy modern work-life imbalances

Poem, black text on a white background -poem reads as:
Title - YOU'RE SO PRETTY (struck out, replaced with) UNRULY
Look at you, you savage woman.
You, hair untamed, hands calloused woman.
You, go-ahead-and-pull-me-down woman.
You, I'll just rise again, and again, and again.
Look at your thick (struck out & replaced with) full belly that keeps you moving.
Look at your flawed (struck out & replaced with) real skin that tells your story.
Look at the love in your thighs, the way they kiss each other.
Look at the fire in your eyes, with their Medusa-stone power.
Turn around, look at the art you left in your wake.
The collection of beasts that stood in your way.
Monuments to the trouble you've made.
L.E. Bowman
Have never read this or come across the poet before, but wow!

I think that in that respect the shop is the same - except we have more comfortable chairs! Bookshops as third spaces that foster community, conversation, belonging & also escape á la Ray Oldenburg are still so necessary.

Please do support your local bookshops. They are esential for independent publishers and have been the patron saints of my writing career through their word-of-mouth support.

It is the conversations & recommendations it has stolen. The unusual book that doesn’t match an algorithm, but that you know if you put it in the hands of the right reader will change something, & the people who come in for a chat or to see friendly faces - we longed for connection during Covid.
