Actually, I’m going to single out Raluca Marinescu because I think she has the chops for this Beyond-Realism-Without-Explicitly-Going-Cartoon line that they’re trying to walk here. She’s GOOD at pushing superreal expressions! Supreme Verdict is the best of those four in that way

Lineup of sick ass scary fantasy clergy dudes by Filipe pagliuso. Some of the accessories make me go 🤨 but in aggregate it looks awesome.

Clearly they hired incredible artists!! But I think the mistake was to try to art direct realism fantasy illustrators into the push and pull of cartooning, which is a completely different skill set that takes time to master. It left us in uncanny valley this time.

One reason these hit so bad for me is that they have compositional AI markers. I don’t think they’re literally AI, but we’ve been trained to read “huge excessiveness in luxury and expressions” as Not Quite Right. These should’ve been *Cartooned,* not just Pushed beyond what the style can handle.
