CHARMM-GUI is a tool that makes preparing Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations easy. MD lets researchers simulate the motions and interactions of proteins, but the initial conditions need to be accurate for the results to be meaningful. This tool makes accurate starting bicelle structures for you!

Bicelles are mixtures of lipids and synthetic detergents. In the right ratios, the lipids will form a BI-layer and the detergents will form a mi-CELLE ring to protect the lipid tails. They can solubilize membrane proteins in experiments where lipid vesicles are too large, like NMR.
It was a pleasure to work with Seonghan, Wonpil, Peter, and Linda on this project! CHARMM-GUI was integral to my doctoral research, so I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to help develop this new functionality during my postdoc. (1/3)
