This does not mean the research didn't employ sound methods and many other reproducibility practices. Even without public data, the description of data and methods in a paper should be transparent enough to understand and to replicate -- and the findings should not be discredited or ignored.

In short, reproducibility is partly about data sharing, but it is also *much* more. While it is true that there are good reasons data cannot always be fully released to the public -- confidential patient health information, or individual locations of species threatened by illegal poaching.

Laws passed by Congress have more legal weight than executive orders, so the NSF shouldnβt prioritize Trumpβs order over its mandate to support underrepresented people in science, Scheppele said. The White House, she said in an email, is βliterally asking the NSF to violate the law!β

Acrylic painting of a roadrunner bird on a small canvas.
Creativity is the antithesis of destruction. Took an hour this week to paint something new at our local arts center with other amateur painters and felt a little better about my corner of the world. I recently visited a warmer state and met this roadrunner that lives on my friend's windowsill.

Federal funding is about so much more than money to do research. It motivates me to think deeply about how my research moves beyond sating my scientific curiosity, and how it can concretely benefit students, my local community, and the taxpaying public. Public service is motivating and fulfilling.

There are private foundations and industry avenues to fund research, but these are not going to fill the gap or be able to step in to replace lost government stability and support for scientific progress.

Applying for these grants is time consuming and challenging. Funding rates are low, but the stability and trust in government support for science has been a foundation for my career, and many others. It feels disorienting to find unstable footing and worry about the risk of broken contracts.
