2/ She uploaded 150 transsphenoidal pituitary cases and helped train AI models that analyze surgical workflow, tool use, and procedural phases.
Danielle’s work is proof that medical students don’t have to wait for residency to contribute to innovation. 🚀
1/ 🎓🧠 It’s never too early to shape the future of surgery.
Between her 3rd and 4th year of medical school at St. George’s University, Danielle Levy partnered with SDSC to lead our first student-driven project on the Surgical Video Platform (SVP).

2/ 🌟 At the center of that story is Dr. Zada, whose leadership left a lasting imprint on our founder, Dr. Donoho. Before “surgical AI” had a name, there were surgeons asking: How do we make hard-won surgical wisdom accessible to more people?

1/ Most of what shapes us as surgeons, scientists, and as leaders, comes from proximity. It can include mentors who’ve walked ahead of us as well as lessons found outside of textbooks.
Our latest blog reflects on the mentorship lineage behind SDSC.

1/ 🗣️ Our Data Science Roundtables (DSRTs) are one of the ways we stay anchored to real clinical needs. They bring together surgeons, researchers, and technologists to identify the questions that matter most, and to ensure the tools we build are driven by practice, not theory.

2/ 🩺🎥🏅 If every surgery had “game film,” what would be the #1 value?
a. Spotting higher complication risks
b. Comparing techniques across surgeons
c. Tracking improvement over time
d. Creating coaching moments for trainees
e. Building a global library of best practices
f. All of the above
1/ 🔍 The upcoming Super Bowl will feature the NE Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks, a revisit of a prior matchup in 2015.
When teams run it back years later, they’re obsessing over film, poring over every snap from their last matchup: what worked, what didn’t, and what’s changed in the lineup.
What's the biggest breakthrough coming to surgery in the next three years? 🩺 👩🏽⚕️🧑🏻⚕️
a. AI surgical decision support
b. Surgical video feedback/coach
c. Remote surgical proctoring
d. Simulation-first training

3/
We explored ideas like:
🔹 Using surgical video + outcomes data to understand case difficulty and complication risk
🔹 Augmenting mentorship for early-career OB-GYNs who may have limited operative volume
🔹 Whether video analysis should play a role in credentialing and certification for MIGS
2/
In a recent SDSC Data Science Roundtable with Dr. Jeffrey Lin, we dug into a question we hear often from surgeons and educators alike:
”If surgery already lives on video, why aren’t we using it more effectively to support training, assessment, and patient safety?”
1/ Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery works. Mastering it is the hard part.
🩺 MIGS has transformed gynecologic care: less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and outcomes often comparable to open surgery. It’s also fundamentally video-based. And yet, the learning curve remains steep.

The shared commitment went beyond instruction:
📓 Training that is rigorous, repeatable, and accessible
🤝 Scalable hands-on learning
🎥 Capturing surgical training video to support future research and education
👩💻 Exploring AI-enabled tools to understand learning curves and trainee progress
1/ We wrapped an incredible experience at the Orlando Health Flexible Ventricular Neuroendoscopy Workshop & Conference 🧠
🌎 Surgeons from 10+ countries across five continents came together for live surgery, hands-on lab training, expert lectures, and case-based discussion focused on ETV-CPC.
