(1) Choose collaborators carefully, and
(2) Personally I found it more fruitful to collaborate with fellow asst profs operating with similar timelines and incentives than sr faculty.

3. The POs for NIGMS and NIA have been phenomenal (as well as NIBIB, which is an aspiration for us). They have been very calm and reassuring, even as I know that their individual lives are very challenging. We are very lucky to have these staff and should be fighting for them whenever possible. 4/n

I found the new review criteria to be helpful for critique construction. No more "weakness counting" for those who wish to avoid it. Execution will probably depend on the SRO but my n=1 to date was positive.

Agreed (n=2, doubling the evidence!). Too many repackaged and hastily assembled proposals, especially when taking a flyer on an RFA.

Ok Teams is a disaster but honestly I really like the new Factor 1/Factor 2 review rubric. Much cleaner discussions, more focused on the science and outcomes, and clear boundaries for the SRO/chair to enforce.

The way NIH's Teams meetings sporadically mute audio between random pairs of participants is a marvel of government efficiency. Bravo on the move away from a reliable videoconf platform, a decision I'm sure was made after consulting with the affected CSR staff.

Yup, just a measure of player outcome regardless of later team moves. Also some of these picks were traded on draft night and probably chosen by the destination team.

And here's how well your team has drafted given who was available at the time (based on career WS data from bbref). League average for making the best possible choice is only 10.8%.

Discuss it with the people the grant supports. They might be considering other career paths if no one upstairs can be bothered to object.

I was just sent this picture of me explaining something to one of the staffers of Representative Suzanne Bonamici (Oregon's 1st congressional district). The thing that impressed me about these congressional staffers is how smart and dedicated they are. I wish we could remove partisan politics.
