Caitlyn is building a case for how much local history can be done when teaching enslavement - there are local connections all across the UK.

Thanks Alex, really helpful analysis. I think the emphasis placed on Oak National Academy, and the contradictions re autonomy/centralised control are at best signs of myopia and at worst reasons for deep concern.

Afrua Hirsh did a brilliant podcast, "We need to talk about Empire". In ep3, she explores the journey of certain rice grain from Sierra Leon to Carolina, hidden and nurtured by enslaved people. These grains chart the middle passage in such deeply human terms and could be sources too!

2. She could then focus on the journey in terms of what was carried across by the enslaved, unsanctioned or unbeknownst to enslavers rather than the horrors of the journey itself. Lots of sources on that.

1. Equiano wrote about it, I'll send you an extract via email. But equally, may be there are better aspects of the topic to achieve her fundamental aims? For instance, has she considered food (esp rice), culture, music and language? Enslaved people brought rice grain across the middle passage?

I love it when students bring in artefacts and this one is one of the best...a 1735 edition of Dialogues of the Dead in great condition....buzzing

We've been having lots of fun threading environmental history through existing parts of our curriculum this year. The only big surprise was how few y7 know the story of Robin Hood!!

2. This technique is a powerful way of centering local and indigenous experiences of British colonisation and also discussing British methods of colonisation their impact. Caveat: this is sensitive stuff - prepare students as such. More than happy to share the extract via dm.

1. After @btrappy.bsky.social's wonderful @1972shp.bsky.social conf session where she used an extract from Amitav Ghosh's "Sea of Poppies" in her Lessons on the British Empire in KS5, I was inspired to do similar using Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" when talking about Britain and Africa.
