I'm grateful to Isa Farfan @isafarfan.bsky.social for her great @hyperallergic.com article covering community backlash against closing the DePaul Art Museum. You can still sign our petition here: openletter.earth/letter-oppos...

"Alison Knowles stands out as the sole female artist among the founders of Fluxus, yet she has remained an enigmatic, underrecognized figure in the history of art. Performing Chance fills a gap in the record, bringing to πŸ’‘Knowles’s transformative body of work," from 🎨 to performance to poetry...

Why the arts still matter at DePaul Economic constraints that suffocate creative expression and access to artistic skill and imagination are now at the front door of DePaul University.

This oped by DePaul student Jessica Saunders says it all. If you wish to sign to oppose the closure of the DePaul Art Museum, you can sign a letter here (please note it requires a email verification, which often goes to spam): openletter.earth/letter-oppos...

I know it is easy to doomscroll, especially today. Please plan for yourself at least one or many more offline activities. Buy a pastry, read a book, go to a museum, see a friend, cook a meal, play with a pet, or even a trip to Costco. Try to limit time on your phone and avoid stewing in anxiety.

Chicago’s DePaul Art Museum to Close After 40 Years The DePaul Art Museum will close after 40 years amid substantial financial challenges at its parent university, which has initiated layoffs.

β€œIt has come to be viewed as a surprisingly important museum in the ecosystem. It is small and willing to do things other museums and even other university museums are not so readily able to do.”

Artist Judy Chicago logs out of Google renovation project over artistic differences The troubles described by the artist are the public's first look behind the glass walls of the $300 million development, beyond the news releases and architectural renderings released by Google.

My architecture column today: "The artist was picked in September to create a new terrazzo tile atrium floor at the base of the building. The job included a new decorative skin β€” possibly a mix of vinyl and stained glass β€” to adorn the atrium’s exposed 17-story elevator system."

While you are watching the game, the perfumed class will wander the streets in a reverie. Quick bises hello by the otherwise empty sushi stand. Courtly bows in front of the gay bar.

From the museum label:

The painting β€œdepicts a monumental female figure in vibrant teal and magenta, shown in three-quarter profile and meeting the viewer's gaze. Her elaborate tignonβ€”a headwrap once imposed by colonial law to mark and suppress women of African descent-is reimagined as a symbol of cultural power. Embedded in the painted fabric are Black panthers, protective azabache charms, and traces of indigo dye tied to the transatlantic slave trade.”

My other research conundrum from today: No one seems to know if you can use an image from the ARTSTOR Visual Arts Library (without a named photographer) in a book.

Have any of you sorted this out?
