Wednesday's spending review revealed the government's plans for the trajectory of the economy, and was largely more forgiving for climate and nature than many expected. So, how did it perform against our asks? πŸ€”πŸš¦

Next week, through the spending review and industrial strategy, the government will set the trajectory of the UK economy for the rest of this parliament.

In this briefing, we set out five things these announcements need to deliver: green-alliance.org.uk/briefing/fiv...

Scunthorpe can be at the heart of a thriving green steel sector This post is by Dr Colin Church, CEO at The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Note: this is a fast-evolving story. For the latest developments, see the BBC’s live coverage. The crisis at…

"The government has a serious choice to make: build a clean steel industry, fit for the future, or rely on others for one of the core materials powering our economy."

In light of Parliament's recall, our latest blog by @drcolinchurch.bsky.social breaks down the decision ahead πŸ‘‰

Gov should also be looking at options to extend downstream processing capacity (eg to make plate and electrical steels) as this is where much of the value and long term jobs will be. A workforce transition plan, agreed with staff is essential (5/5)

Far from making 2nd rate steel, UK EAFs feed manufacture of aeroplane landing gear, nuclear reactors & naval submarines. C80% of UK’s current steel demand can be met with recycled steel. A new fleet of EAFs can be fed with mix of scrap and iron with BFs maintained over transition 4/5

11.04.2025 08:47 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The US steel industry is already focused around recycling steel in EAFs & European countries are looking to this kind of future too, backed up by some big investments in clean iron making. Global steel buyers are looking for cleaner steel. 3/5

Retaining the blast furnaces won’t make us more secure. The UK produces more scrap than it does steel so in long term it makes sense to use this resource rather than export it and then import vast quantities of coking coal and iron ore from around the world to make primary steel 2/5

Watching the Scunthorpe situation drag on is painful, even from a distance. An enduring solution is needed after years of the steel industry, workers & local communities being on a rollercoaster journey of ups and (mostly) downs. But some of the discussion hasn’t stuck to the facts. 1/5

Grangemouth: Project Willow report predicts 800 green jobs could be created The Project Willow report identifies nine areas for potential investment at the site of Scotland's only oil refinery.

Closing the Grangemouth refinery will be incredibly difficult for workers and the local community.

It’s good that plans are being made to find new uses for the site, but these have started late and without much transparency. Workers and local people should be at the heart of the conversation.

Never mind the runways, here’s how to get green growth in the UK Westminster, we have a problem. A growth problem. The economy shrank in January and economists are cutting their forecasts for 2025. Sub-par growth means stagnating living standards and less cash f…

"Last autumn’s budget undermined short term growth prospects by loading extra taxes on business, while many of the sensible investment projects greenlighted will deliver growth only over the longer term".

Steve Coulter, head of economy, outlines what the govt need to do to kickstart #greengrowth:

Yesterday, the government announced an expansion of the Port of Cromarty Firth, making it the UK's first port able to create floating offshore wind turbines at scale.

Floating offshore wind will be a significant new industrial opportunity & other countries are already investing in their capacity.

Transport emissions are off track.

We need more policy that cuts emissions more quickly to meet our net zero strategy targets. In this context, expanding Heathrow and other airports would be a reckless move.

Rachel Reeves says growth β€˜trumps’ net zero as Heathrow runway decision looms Chancellor will indicate backing for west London airport expansion next week

Not a great message to green investors now turning away from the US: "we're not too serious about net zero, we'd sooner have a row about a carbon budget-busting airport expansion that won't happen for years, if ever".

We need a serious (green) growth strategy.
