We're saddened to hear of the passing of Ken Sanford, UNC Charlotte's first director of public information and publications. Sanford started work at Charlotte College in 1964, and retired in 1994. In 1996 he authored "Charlotte and UNC Charlotte: Growing Up Together," a history of the University.

On this day 67 years ago, four students made Charlotte history by stepping into schools they had been barred from all their lives. On September 4, 1957, Delois Huntley, Dorothy Counts, Gus Roberts, and Girvaud Roberts became the first Black children to attend some of Charlotteβs all-white schools.
