Measles virus and rinderpest virus divergence dated to the sixth century BCE
Measles virus diverged from rinderpest virus in the sixth century BCE, indicating an early origin for human measles.
Measles likely came from cows (via rinderpest) around the 6th century BCE.
For 2,500 years, we didn’t evolve superhuman resistance—children just died. Real protection only came in the 1960s, with vaccines.
Our superpower isn’t evolving into superhumans. It’s outthinking pathogens.

A star cluster within a nebula. The background is filled with thin, pale blue clouds. Parts are thicker and pinker in colour. The cluster is made up of bright blue stars that illuminate the nebula around them. Large arcs of dense dust curve around, before and behind the clustered stars, pressed together by the stars’ radiation. Behind the clouds of the nebula can be seen large numbers of orange stars.

Agree with @bradspellberg.bsky.social it takes time and being persistent. Not backing down, but knowing when to compromise. The transplant surgeons at my place are much more amenable to oral now. And it takes unified messaging from other ID colleagues.

Big Change in TB treatment recommendations. 6 months of RIPE (also called RHEZ) was once the only treatment in town for susceptible TB. Now there's an all oral FOUR months of:
Rifapentine
INH
PZA
Moxifloxacin

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford Medicine have devised an influenza vaccine that prompts immunity to ALL four major flu subtypes AND shows potential against bird flu, indicating a significant advancement in flu prevention and a potential increase in vaccine efficacy. Let’s talk about that! 🧪🧵⬇️

WHO looks back at 2024
Each year WHO takes stock of key moments in health and science over the past 12 months. Here is our review of a very complex 2024. Here’s to a healthier, more peaceful 2025!
WH0 2024 in review:
7 countries ( Brazil, Chad, India, Jordan, Pakistan, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam) eliminated a neglected tropical disease in 2024, including human African trypanosomiasis, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, and trachoma.

The US military is the most vaccinated segment of the population. They achieved 97% COVID vaccine coverage in 2021 and receive special vaccines pre-employment in addition to standard adult vaccines.
We should aspire to the same levels of vaccination coverage for children in US not less.

This is discussed in wikiguidelines. It is reasonable to not reset if the valve culture from the explant is negative, and it is reasonable to start over if the culture is positive. But there are no data really either way. See WikiGuidelines answer below.

Sweden wants to be the first country to eliminate HPV by 2027
The Nordic country's ambitious timeline relies on high vaccination uptake and efficient mass screening and follow-up treatment.
While US is trying to bring back polio, Sweden is trying to eliminate HPV
"Researchers will start screening to find all pre-existing infections that might cause cervical cancer starting in the second half of 2025" goal is to sample entire population and vaccinate.
