Trump 2017: "It is my pleasure and my honor to announce my nomination of Jerome Powell."

Trump today: "He's a terrible Fed chair. I was surprised he was appointed. I was surprised frankly that Biden put him in and extended him."

Every news story will include both clips, right?

1/ If Justice Barrett thinks we need to go back to what the Founding Fathers intended, I’ve got news for her. Their biggest concern was avoiding tyranny. So they created 3 branches of gov’t & divvied up the power the people (that’s us) were allowing the gov’t to use to create order for all of us.

A Military Ethics Professor Resigns in Protest Over the course of several months, Pauline Shanks Kaurin concluded she no longer had the academic freedom necessary for doing her job.

Seven years ago, Pauline Shanks Kaurin left a good job as a tenured professor, uprooted her family, and moved to teach military ethics at the Naval War College. Now she's leaving in protest of policies she can't support and that make her job impossible.

Time for a Democracy Revival A blueprint for reclaiming that which defines us

contrarian.substack.com/p/time-for-a... A β€œDemocracy Revival 2028” (better than β€œThe Contract with America”) could set down serious reforms to recover our democracy. Surely everyone running as a D can coalesce behind principles like due process, civil rights, and ending executive power grabs.

We’ve bombed Iran. And dismantled our joint terrorism task force. And sent a third of the FBI to help ICE. And gutted the National Security Council. And a drunk guy is in charge at the pentagon. And our intelligence allies probably won’t share intel with us. Because people couldn’t vote for a woman.

β€œIt's not a partisan issue. It’s not an ideological issue. So who voted for this? I personally don't remember Donald Trump's campaign promise to cut breast cancer research and to make menopause harder for American women,” says @chrislhayes.bsky.social.

We’ve talked about this before, but we wanted to expand on it a little more. Late last week, Elon Musk’s so-called β€œDepartment of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) effectively took control of the Department of the Interior without a single Senate confirmation, public hearing, or vote.

The political science professor Corey Robin to WNYC's On the Media

Brooke Gladstone: During the first Trump administration, you came on the show and argued against those who were invoking the word fascism. You know, douse your hair doesn't need to be on fire.

Corey Robin: I was afraid you were going to ask me about this. I was skeptical in the first Trump administration that they had the kind of power and the kind of authority that many of their critics feared that they had.

Brooke Gladstone: Which they didn't have in the first administration.

Corey Robin: Right. I was skeptical coming into this second administration that they would be able to wield the kind of power that people feared they would wield. I have since turned out to be wrong. They have set off multiple conflagrations and I have been shaken out of my skepticism.

Brooke Gladstone: You don't think the courts will save us?

Corey Robin: I never thought the courts would save us. In fact, the McCarthy era, I think, is a good example of this. When the courts finally started intervening and striking down a lot of the instruments of the second red scare, it was after the red scare had succeeded. I always feel like the courts come late. We have to save ourselves.

A political science professor during Trump's first term argued against use of the word fascism. He was skeptical that the Trump crew had that kind of power. "I have since turned out to be wrong," said Corey Robin to On the Media.

Good on him for recognizing that. www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm...

Elon Musk said Social Security is a 'Ponzi scheme.' It's the opposite. Musk's agenda to sow mistrust about Social Security looks like a pretext for unpopular cuts.

It is an outrageous order that no other litigant could hope to get, destroying a critical funding stream that saves lives. We’ll see if the court can somehow save its credibility. I doubt it.

It is not only that Trump got 4 votes, but the stated reason for allowing the sentencing to go forward is that it wouldn't take much time, won't lead to jail, and isn't too inconvenient. SCOTUS did everything but offer to validate his parking and buy hm lunch.
