I lived in Austin for 20 years, and I had a saying about travel: the only proper way to leave Austin is in an airplane, because Austin is surrounded by Texas. It takes sooooo long to get out of the state!

At the end of this bad week, a friend gave me a lovely compliment: he told me I'm a north star person for him. I almost cried. We've known each other for 10+ years (we met when I was 50 and he was 25). I helped him with his surprise proposal to his wife, and I couldn't be prouder of who he's become.

HEB is one of the things I miss most about no longer living in Texas. they are truly amazing during a crisis. I would stab someone with a fork if they tried to steal my well-used HEB grocery bags.

That was the first and last time I cursed someone. I'm glad I learned the lesson with something small and inconvenient, as opposed to something that could have had devastating consequences when the universe threw it back on me.

And George, if you're out there, I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that.

After dissembling my shoe for the third time, I examined the bottom of my toe, and discovered a small bump there. When I got home, I got out the tweezers and a needle, and pulled a miniscule shard of glass out of my foot.

It's happened less and less over the years, but yesterday morning I was at the gym and there was something sharp hitting the bottom of my right second toe. I kept pulling my shoe off, running my fingers over the inside of it, thinking there was a small rock in it.

At the time, I don't think I knew the adage, "whatever you put out comes back to you tenfold." I have no idea if he cut his hands while at work, but for years afterwards, I would find tiny pieces of glass in my feet. I don't know if that happens to other people, but it happened to me. A lot.

I was pretty devastated about it, and tended to take break-ups really badly, so I decided I wanted revenge. He was a chemist, and I decided to put a curse on him: he would have problems with glass. I figured this would affect him when he was working in the lab.

A little story about curses.

When I was in my 20s, I was living in Oakland and got a new housemate. He had recently broken up with a girl he was super in love with, and needed a place to live. After a while, we started sleeping together. I fell for him hard, but he was rebounding. He called it off.

the old HP laserjets from the late 90s/early 2000s with giant cartridges are absolute workhorses. I used them when I worked in law offices and they would print thousands of pages reliably. I would love to own one.

but yeah, I think we bought my mom 3 printers in 18 months, and they all sucked.

one of my proudest moments of being an auntie to a friend's kid was teaching her how to say "cooking emcees like a pound of BACON" when she was about 6-7.
