'Leftovers' ~ A very simple spoon carved from leftover pieces of Walnut and Maple burl. I used a French curve template to draw the lines on both the bowl and handle.

Well... I ended up carving 5 or 6 different lizard spoons over time and so I just refer to it as a 'series'. Same with the 'snake' spoons and the Rorschach spoons.

'Leopard Lizard' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Australian Brown Mallee burl (if I remember).

'Leopard Handle' spoon in Surinam Cherry wood. The idea was good but the dye bled into the side grain. I might try it again with milk paint for a 'cleaner' look.

Known for its medical properties.. and also rated as one of the world's hardest woods (used as ship propeller bearings since the 1800's).

All three of these spoons were carved in Lilac wood. Lilac is a very fine grained wood that holds even the finest detail. The branches have a tendency to split very badly as they dry... but the solid wood between the cracks are well worth working with.

Yeah.... this is actually one of those that are semi-functional.... maybe good for dry goods. The lamination would not hold up well with soap and water. Maybe 20% of the spoons I did carve were intended to be fully functional.

'Looking Back' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Huon Pine.

Right now I can't recall the wood type on the second spoon... but the interior lamination was knife handle material that a shop neighbor gave me. I re-cut that and glued it up diagonally.

'Loopy' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Sapele wood with Holly overlay. Loopy not only describes the spoon.. but also the maker after he realized he could have much more easily carved the Holly BEFORE laminating.

'Macadamia Female Form' ~ While sanding this Macadamia spoon a shop neighbor came over complaining that he had messed up on his project. I went to check it out.. and after teasing him real good... I came back to my project and immediately managed to break it in half. Karma sucks.

I checked with the local branch of the Inter-Galactic Research Library and their research team has confirmed this.

Yeah... left field alright. I had another one for a 'rabbit spoon' and it was cool because the wife gifted the husband a piece of art every anniversary based on a drawing that held sentimental value from their first date.

'MarshWiggle' ~ Wooden spoon carved in black line spalted Beech wood. Spalting is usually caused by fungi 'invading' the wood as it begins to deteriorate. Black line spalt can be quite graphic.
