Apparently you shouldn't buy RAM like I did, aka two sets of two sticks, so XMP seems to be having some issues.
It's really hard to find any real information about this stuff though. The amount of confident incorrectness, purchasers bias and assholery is WILD.
Two days later, I can confirm that the 2024 computer is in fact better than the 2015 one. I also got my first 4K (or above 1080p) monitor, which is a more drastic upgrade than I had imagined - especially for productivity.

i love all game developers except the shitheads who make the game actually change resolution when you have to tab through a list of resolutions
either make a dropdown, or only change resolution after confirming the change. otherwise you're a monster
