10th has been a the unofficial drag strip for addled carheads racing into and out of Capitol Hill. This makes it so much easier for my nine year old to walk the dog over to Volunteer without running a gauntlet.

My latest newsletter is out!

In this issue, I share a report out of my time at the United Nations Ocean Conference last month in Nice. Ocean-based innovation holds much promise, but we will need all-hands-on-deck to bring it to scale.

The world is moving on. As US port throughput drops, Asian and European port traffic is increasing as trade flows divert around the US to avoid our tariffs and uncertainty.

Warehouse vacancy rates in the US are at an 11 year high. Whatever slack was in the supply chain to accommodate tariffs is gone at this point. Inventories are drawn down and product hitting store shelves now will carry at least a 10% tariff burden. ⬆️ prices, ⬇️ sales 🟰 economic downturn.

Only Congress can fix this. They need to rein in administration overreach and reclaim their authority over tariff policy.

The chaos caused by trade policy with no rhyme nor reason is pushing countries to establish stronger relationships with each other. In May at a conference in Korea I attended, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese delegates were discussing how to strengthen ties in light of the US’s bad faith negotiating.

US businesses get hurt both ways. Last week I met with two businesses: an importer who had to lay off a third of staff because of supply chain uncertainty and an exporter who has lost all of their export business to Asia.

So the average tariff rate of 20%, which will kick in on August 1st and is higher than the infamous Smoot Hawley tariffs that deepened and prolonged the Great Depression, will reroute supply chains around the US.

Consumers will pay in the form of higher costs, fewer options, and empty shelves.

As the next self-imposed tariff deadline approaches, it’s a good time to point out that the consequences don’t kick in for consumers (and the economy) for many months. Anticipatory purchases and inventory drawdowns blunt early price pressure. Any fix will require months to undo the damage.

Great question! All will be required to plug in by 2027. I can find out why this ship wasn’t plugged in. Do you know if it had just arrived or was about to depart when you took the picture?

Last week, I joined Kaitlin Collins of CNN to discuss the impacts of tariffs on port operations. We've been seeing cargo volumes drop meaning less work and fewer options in stores.
