Recurrent cortical networks encode natural sensory statistics via sequence filtering The visual cortex receives a stream of high-dimensional sensory input. The role of dense local, recurrent cortical connections in shaping responses to these inputs has been unclear. Here, we show that...

Interesting use of AI methods of self-supervised learning, to analyze canary song.

Ugh it’s so fun doing science but it feels so bleak to be a postdoc right now. I had dinner with a very senior scientist/a group of trainees this week and his question to us was: how many of you are still seriously considering trying for faculty jobs and what countries are you willing to move to? πŸ™ƒ

Private money cannot replace public funding of science Who should pay for American science? In the current political climate, many are looking to the private sector to compensate for cuts in public funding. At the Harvard School of Public Healthβ€”particula...

Onfim’s drawing of himself on horseback as a warrior defeating an enemy.

Two of Onfim’s works. On the left is a copy of a passage from the Book of Psalms he did for schoolwork. On the right is an apparently autobiographical depiction of a monster labeled with β€œI am a wild beast.”

Some more spelling practice by Onfim with some human figures who have round heads and varying numbers of fingers on their big hands.

Onfim’s writing practice accompanied by 7 little people in his particular drawing style, who tend to have very big hands with many fingers.

Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.

Very interesting. Do you think that this could reflect a difference in neophobia for artificial materials? I.e. will non urban birds approach a novel natural puzzle (like an unfamiliar looking shrub, strange nut or fruit) as fast as an urban bird will approach a novel human artifact.

I guess what confuses me about this idea is that a simulation by definition dispenses with most details. Without knowing how the system works who’s to say I whether I need to simulate a path using 1000 small steps, 10 very large ones etc. Maybe simulating being at the goal is enough for some plans.

Curious to read but I don’t understand this statement that fragmented replay in principal rules out model based planning. Why couldn’t you have a planning system that jumps around?
