Am I alone in occasionally finding it difficult, even with the best intentions and at appropriately moderate speeds, to see absolutely everyone in a dark coat on an unlit crossing?

I can imagine the resentment at such paternalistic intrusion - particularly when it comes from drivers; but there is an arguable public safety angle to the case…

Has the time come for greater energy be put into at least alerting the public to the merits of some form of reflective clothing or adornment when walking in the dark?

I know pedestrians should not be expected to make the adaptations for traffic, but as I drive around many towns in Europe at this time of year, I am conscious that pedestrians are often highly vulnerable on ill-lit pedestrian crossings - and all the more so when their clothing is dark.

What is the right border-line between public safety and authoritarian presumption - when the issue is badly-lit pedestrian crossings?
