Particularly as I work in the nerd stuff field professionally running a comics/books/games store.

Mood. Having the feeling of someone trying to hack the pattern recognition engine in my head sucks as well.

I can see that. I grew up in boardsport culture so seeing how the cultural landscape has changed regarding how much work getting sponsorships at the time was to now when it's got to be constantly selling even more.

Stack that on top of the rampant consumerism of the D&D as lifestyle brand stuff...

I think it says a lot more of how much worse the socio-economic situation has got that we went from "selling out you're ideas for money is bad actually" to what we have now.

I definitely find it kind of morbid now how often people will sell stuff to you with a straight face. Like, extra ads to go with the ads as opposed to "this is a thing I'm obligated to do".

"Content Creation" as a concept has to burn.

I'm not sure it's common knowledge but there are literally thousands and thousands of people employed in India working 9-5 to train LLMs to be "smart" and "safe".

Tech bros laud it as a technological achievement but it's the same old story - just another way of hiding the real labor of people.

Venture Brothers and a few others aside that is kind of Adult Swim's house style.

Part of me wants them to do a hard reset on everything but as you say their too tangled up in their everything.

Yeah, this is the big mood for me. Like, I just love games *a lot*. I didn't get into RPGs for D&D even if listening to people play D&D 4e was my entry point.

I'll often cite that listening to the Know Evil actual play of Eclipse Phase was the thing that hooked me. Telling serious stories & ideas

I'm often frustrated by how a lot of left-leaning, otherwise class-conscious D&D 5e enthusiasts will take any criticism of their favourite game as an excuse to dunk on Indie developers. Coming to the defense of a big corporation while punching down on small creators is *such* a rotten look.

Also Dungeon Meshi reminds me of Split/Party's article about mercenaries in real like and RPGs. If D&D hadn't been made by rightwing Christians and have all that in it you could tell stories about groups of marginalized folk having to do dangerous jobs for pay.

I think it is a strong look. That and Warhammer Orks are distinctive.

Or at least it treats the subjects of dungeon fantasy seriously as opposed to just acting like "Always Chaotic Evil" are there to be obstacles to the party.

It's true I think I definitely prefer the pulp fantasy of WHF. Though the build up to the End Times stuff is kind of a bummer...

40k is really dependent on a handful of writers and also it's where the Horus Heresy lives so...

There is this tonal whiplash in how it's presented I think lots of SatAM cartoon on the one hand... Baldur's Gate 3 at the other end.

I'm having trouble putting my exact thoughts into words.

I was an Ebberon person and back then it felt like things were more distinctive.

I was thinking yesterday about how the 5e rulebooks just feels like lists of stuff. Other RPG books were extremely evocative to me.

... But in a way that feels kinda Fortnite and Apex Legends as well
