I know it’s these patterns are used and reused but you don’t understand, I loved this shirt into tatters. I cathected like a baby bird onto this pattern. Does it come in a wallpaper? Can I live in it?

Red, blue, yellow and white paisley scarf

Red, blue, yellow and white paisley scarf

This is random and personal but I have lots of art folks on here so I wanted to ask if anyone knows the name or origin of this paisley. I had a beloved shirt as a child in this pattern that I wore to rags and it just popped up in an ad for a silk scarf and I nearly fell out of my seat.

Bulls are back on pace for 37 wins and are accumulating medical mysteries.

Centuries of Crusades, the expulsion of the Jews from France and England, that’s where we got the idea

I study conspiracy theories from the medieval period to the present, and the thing about them is that they are a great way to seize power and a terrible way to keep it. They depend on dialing down social trust so low that you cannot recuperate it, even for yourself. 3/3

The only way to keep going is to deny victory long enough to consolidate enough power that support doesn't matter. I think we're near that tipping point, which is why the narratives are getting wonky: was Hegseth uninvolved, or was he justified? is Trump innocent, or is a 15yo a small adult? 2/3

MAGA used conspiracy theories to seize power, but the problem now is that the dog caught the car. The story that conspiracy theorists love to tell about themselves is of the Alamo; outmanned, they bravely man the last ramparts of civilization. But this story is incompatible with victory. 1/3

Quite aside from the obvious transactional misery of Galloway’s worldview can we all stop having to sit in on the therapy sessions for these men? Like I didn’t need to know all that about Scott. I would like to know less, thanks.

I have been thinking a lot about hie we are simultaneously told that the guys behind AI tech are the most brilliant ones to walk the earth — and yet they require the creative output of the rest of humanity to make their product go, and they resort to stealing it, to boot.

I didn’t think it was. Like all good services, it requires enormous investment, which is why it’s all the more amazing that it continues in the face of so many other university collapses.

One year I checked into my hotel at Kzoo and the teenager at the desk shyly asked if I was “one of those King Arthur people” and I paused and then just said “yes I am”

Once again, ILL remains the purest representation of scholarly community. I use it so much I often write little notes back and forth with the librarians when I’ve borrowed a lot from their library. It’s the closest you can get to those old penpal schemes and I love it.

5 years after Srebrenica, sure. At the height of his power and damage his ridiculous aesthetic did not detract from his power, and in fact enhanced it.

Understandably, then, when Milosevic first appeared on the radar of Yugoslavia's educated middle class, he was seen as a deeply ridiculous figure. A dour communist apparatchik, his affect was transparently false. He spoke in an overwrought, airy way, his head perennially tilted upwards, capped by a crown-line pompadour.
But my parents and their peers were wrong.
Milosevic's appeal to the supposedly beleaguered ethnic Serbs of Kosovo, Yugoslavia's poorest region, struck a note with many, especially in Serbia. He and his tight-knit circle of political operatives promptly outmaneuvered the sclerotic communist party apparatus in Belgrade.
They quickly seized control of the country's state media, while simultaneously ingratiating themselves with the hardline authoritarian leadership of the Yugoslav military.

There’s a good piece about how educated Yugoslavs didn’t take Milosevic seriously bc he was so transparently ridiculous, both in looks and voice, but that was part of what made him so popular when he made blood and soil speeches.

I think there are good aesthetic comparisons to be made to people like Slobodan Milosevic or even Kim Jong-Un. Objectively ridiculous looking individuals, but that is part of their appeal—reality doesn’t matter.

We’ve been working on this problem for abbreviated Latin (the primary documentary language for the Middle Ages) and by far the limiting factor is the training data. There are not very many people trained to do the paleography well enough. But this is well within our grasp!

26.11.2025 18:29 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

It’s totally solvable. We have a model for abbreviated Latin that we trained on 4k lines (basically nothing, when it comes to these kinds of things). You just need to take a base model and train on a specialized data set.

The thing is, “how do you cover a ruler who has an indefinite reign” is the kind of pseudo-philosophizing that sounds like an interesting question until you remember that the discipline of history exists

Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea
