There is something to be said about the discipline and focus of the parties who want to see fossil fuels burn forever. They are methodical, well funded, and spend ample time planning before doing. This I think about too, and the similarities and contrasts I've encountered in climate.

Our opponents stay organized and building all of the time. They have not considered giving up or that their project is hopeless, even though the science of climate change says otherwise. I think about this a lot.

Can’t believe I left out public power. I’m my own worst hype machine. We’re gathering a national summit this fall- organizers from at least 20 different campaigns are coming and I didn’t boil the ocean to find them. We are on the move in a real way.

Probably the enormous pull back of philanthropic funding on climate because they accomplished what they set out to do - but didn’t correctly predict how it would play out with the whole fascism thing - means the future of “the climate movement” looks very different from its last ~20 years.

Not for nothing I think this is precisely why @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social’s encouragement to find people who are DOING something rather than telling you to BELIEVE something is pretty right on. Tenant, rank and file worker, pro-Palestine, etc organizers are on the move & seeing real opportunity.

Using the way many people think about hope in this short thread but relying on the phrase “Hope is a discipline” in my personal life — it is a process, not a feeling, and we make it with our actions, getting up every day and doing something within our control to do, building for a collective win.

Maybe if one is feeling the latter there’s new politics one can find; work one could do; comrades one can make. Many many of us are still here doing the work - without being naïve about the challenge or our odds - because the alternative is to give up, spiritually, emotionally, a living death.

I think there’s a big difference between “all hope is lost” and “I have lost hope” and in climate it is really important to distinguish between the two. My personal feelings, your personal feelings are not the limits of our collective politics.

Yeah let me say I understand and hope my reply isn’t construed as judgmental of how NY HEAT became what it was. I wasn’t there and a lot of hard work went into it. But this particular bad policy abounds and we have to call it that to get out of this wreck.
