This gray jay was hopping about in the fresh snow. As winter approaches, this jay uses its sticky spit to glue food to tree branches above the eventual snow line. Fossils of this species have been recovered dating 18,000 years old.

Anyone who read A Ghost of Caribou will be familiar with this little plant I came across while hiking — lycopodium. Its spores can erupt in flames when ignited, as Alex Carter knows all too well. It’s used for flame and explosion special FX in movies!

I was taking macro photos of bumblebees when I heard some rustling in the willows nearby. Out stepped a black bear with these two delightful cubs. As they meandered off, one of the cubs kept looking back at me.

I apologize for the quality of the footage, it was nearly dark and I didn't have my low light camera with me.

I was hiking along a river just after sunset and noticed this bat flying back and forth, catching insects and skimming the water.

Suddenly it got too close to the water and plunked in. It instantly swam to shore and drip dried on a rock before taking off again.
