We are all Brendan Fraser stuffed into a tree suit in "Rental Family."

A digital display on a metro station notes that trains in various directions are 1 and 5 minutes away respectively. Also, a graphic at botto shows who crowded the individual cars are. In this case, each are green with only stick figure, to show that the train is not crowded.

So Vanity Fair called me a β€œmuseum snob” for likening the new LACMA building to a β€œsmall-city airport terminal.” I stand by my reporting.

I don't know who designed it, but always curious to see how this history is remembered.

Also, it has some sort of water feature at bottom but it wasn't working when I was there.

On the third floor of a journalists' association building in Santiago you'll find a small monument that pays tribute to journalists killed and disappeared during the Pinochet regime.

Among the names is Charles Horman, who inspired Costa-Gavras's "Missing."

I'm sure I went to this mall as a kid because my grandfather's home wasn't too far from here, but I had not been able to register all of this architectural awesomeness as an adult. Long live the caracoles!

I'm in Santiago and I made it to South America's Guggenheim. (It was on the life list.) Really, it's a spiral mall, or caracol, an architectural type typical of Chile that came about in the '70s. In this one, you can get your cell phone fixed, get your nails done and buy dildos.

A Western That Goes Where Cormac McCarthy Wouldn’t Álvaro Enrigue’s Now I Surrender scraps the simplistic binary of cowboys and Indians in favor of a wild, multifaceted war story.

"Today, the southern U.S. border is depicted by right-wing figures as a hard line between us and them, two groups with irreconcilable interests. In fact, it isβ€”and has always beenβ€”a polyglot meeting point."

I review Álvaro Enrigue's latest for @theatlantic.com:

Why We Misunderstand the Chinese Internet Journalist Yi-Ling Liu’s The Wall Dancers traces how the Internet affected daily life in China, showing how similar this corner of the Web is to the one experienced in the West.
