A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they donโ€™t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

From a poetry collection by Mary Oliver, where after a hundred poems showcasing gentle observations on nature and animals, she hits you with this

Apple just sent me a notification about calories burned per day/wk/mnth. Spoiler alert, they all went down.
Hey, Apple, two things: 1. Gimme a break, itโ€™s fucking January; b. I was sick as a dog for half the month, and 3. The world is on fire.
I know I said two, but I feel like a list needs three.

Word of day is โ€˜unasinousโ€™ (17th century): united in stupidity.

A riff on โ€˜unanimousโ€™: which comes from the Latin for โ€˜one mindโ€™. โ€˜Unasinousโ€™ means โ€˜one assโ€™.

Word of the day is โ€˜catch-fartโ€™ (17th century: an obsequious individual who will always follow the political wind.

I Will Pay Any Amount to Not Pay My Taxes Iโ€™ve gotten myself into a bit of a jam. A series of natural disasters is barreling towards my home, and there is a severe shortage of resources and...

"Why should I pay a small amount to help myself and my community when I can pay an exorbitant amount just to help myself? Taxation is theft, but price gouging is just good business. So gouge me all you want. Just donโ€™t trample my freedoms by taxing me."
