Transit was a mess today, so I walked 1.7 miles (at 8F). My reward: watching a bald eagle on the Charles River. It was on the ice for some of the time, circled up a few times. I think it had found something on the surface, but maybe it broke through & caught a fish?
Anyway, a fun find.

Twas the night before Christmas, and all were abed
visions of dougnhuts danced in our heads
when under Rβs blind there arose such a rattle,
they peeked underneath it prepared to do battle.
And this their sleep-muzzled eyes did assail:
4 tiny paws and a large bushy tail.

I didn't realize that Piffaro was performing, or that you're also intereseted in early music!

The River Has Roots
AN INDIE NEXT AND LIBRARYREADS PICK!The River Has Roots is the hugely anticipated solo debut of the New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award winning author ...
Young Adult in my household has been singing "Binnorie" at least once a day for the last few months.
In other news, I recently threw @amalelmohtar.com 's The River Has Roots at them one afternoon. They were done by night. And (like me) loved it. us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

Saw this and thought of @nicolaz.bsky.social since this is in the vicinity of her period of interest, and she's certainly given serious thought to the question of Black folks in now-England at that point. (Original question is ~resolved, but still.)

I felt like when I (genx) was in high school (Texas, to be fair), I got that vibe a lot from my (late-)boomer teachers. Alas that it's true here. Thanks for the reminder to stay off nextdoor...

Ditto. (I not only used G+ circles extensively, I *worked* on the dumb thing for a while. No idea anyone else ever picked that feature up.)

Spines of John Wiswell's _Wearing the Lion_ and Elizabeth Bear's _The Folded Sky_.
Fun author event today with @matociquala.bsky.social and @wiswell.bsky.social. My books even made it in from the car undrenched. I hope the authors also escaped their evenings safe from the brief-but-intense downpour.

I see a lot of authors on here posting their book birthday announcements but what I donβt see are the genre reveal parties.

I'm from the other side of the pen/pin line, and living in Michigan was an *adjustment*. (Luckily I'd taken Ling 101 & knew about the issue)
Coworker: can I borrow a pin?
Me: [...why sewing stuff? oh right...] sure, here's a writing thing.

And my daughter did a high school history "thesis" on women soldiers of the Civil War. IIRC, it also helped that there was a heavy emphasis on modesty, such that tent-mates didn't undress in front of each other. (Also, many of them dressed as men & became tent-mates with their husbands)

@victoriagoddard.bsky.social 's books have been some of my go-to rereads in the last several years. If for some reason you don't have them, this looks like a great bundle.

My grandmother was entirely unwilling to account properly for this issue. She kept insisting on putting a viburnum that would grow to 6-8' tall and 4-8' around maybe a foot from the deck. 15 years later, we have a viburnum trying to grow through the railings. Good job planting for what will be!

It's been a long time since I read Ammonite (not long after it first came out, I'm pretty sure). But I remember really enjoying it -- and of course I've enjoyed all of Nicola Griffith's *other* stuff. So of course I grabbed this.

Year in review: good riddance to bad rubbish.
Side note: if a year treats you badly, burning the year in effigy (especially in company) can be great. Take a paper calendar of the year and feed it to the flames month by month.
Pretty sure 2025 has to be differently terrible.
