12:38pm Sunday: intervals of sun out there this afternoon but also some lake-effect rain and wet snow showers in places. It’s blustery and a lot colder than yesterday.

November 15th, 1996:

A nearly week-long lake effect snow event in western New York, northeastern Ohio, and northwest Pennsylvania finally ended. Reported totals were immense, peaking at nearly 69" in Chardon, Ohio. Damage in the region was estimated at ~$25 million.

4:45pm Saturday: all is quiet now, but showers should blossom over the next few hours. Gusty winds will be possible with these. 7pm simulated radar:

After a milder period around Thanksgiving, a colder regime should start to take hold at the end of November and start of December. December could end up being quite cold this year.

Still a low-end chance for a stray, gusty thunderstorm or a at least a "power shower" late in the afternoon or early in the evening Saturday.

Nice Space Station flyby early on this Thursday evening.

Temperatures will pop for one day: Saturday. 60 or higher will be possible, but shower chances will increase as we go into the afternoon and early evening. A gusty late afternoon thunderstorm can't be ruled out as well.

Northern Lights are making an appearance tonight, especially when viewed through a camera lens.

A lot of instances of the Northern Lights lately? Solar cycles are 11 year cycles and we have ben near "solar maximum" over the last year or so. This results in lots of geomagnetic activity. This solar max has been particularly strong, even stronger than expected.

Before sunset, it looks like the aurora event probably peaked last night. But, there's still an elevated chance of seeing SOME color. Best bet is south/west of Youngstown early this evening, where the clouds have already thinned...then in the entire area later as the sky clears.

Northern Lights: A potent geomagnetic storm continues. Displays will probably not be as vivid tonight as last night, but our region has a better chance for a clear enough sky, especially just to our south/west.

Final snow forecast vs. reality: We were a little underdone from around Warren to Southington and a little overdone from SW Mahoning into NW Columbiana, as well as NE Trumbull. Otherwise, pretty good forecast.

Snow update: highest chance for big totals will be in northern/eastern Mercer County, but changeable conditions will be found everywhere. Lower snow totals does not=no impacts. Have to watch for reductions in visibility and slick conditions even in areas that "only" pick up 1".

Road impacts tonight/Tuesday: highest in Mercer County and just to the west....but even in the "low" area, surfaces can be slick at times. Keep it slow!

2 areas where the snow will probably be most problematic tonight into Tuesday morning: 1) Between our viewing area and Akron/Cleveland on the Turnpike, I-76, 422, etc. 2) Ashtabula Co to Erie PA and down into central/eastern Mercer Co, including I-79.

Snow Forecast: here's the updated expectations as of Sunday morning. Highest impacts and highest chance for accumulations will come Monday evening through mid-morning Tuesday.

The early-week snow will be largely lake-effect driven, especially Monday evening through Tuesday morning in our area. So it's not a surprise that the highest odds of at least a few inches will be in northern/central Trumbull and Mercer.

Although there will be some flakes in the air Sunday night into Monday, we are not expecting many impacts. Monday night and early Tuesday can be a different story; plan on a slow commute, especially north of Rt 224.

Weekend forecast: Saturday is the pick day. Sunday will bring falling afternoon temperatures. Best chance for showers will be during the morning. Flurries and a snow shower Sunday night as temperatures slip below freezing.
