But it's a tenuous existence, because they always fear public accountability.

That's why their first acts are to suppress journalism.

So, like Stalin, Trump calls the Press the Enemy of the State.

In the end, people remember who empowered the dictators. And when the dictators fall, their henchmen flee. Look at post-Assad Syria or (further back) the Eastern European Soviet Satellite states like Romania after the Cold War ended. People weren't happy about the autocrats who oppressed them.
