All I'm gonna say here is in this scenario there is no instance of you maintaining your freedom. You either eventually eat your firearm, they take you out, or your punishment will be several times worse than it would have been. They win in the end. Owning a firearm would not improve my situation.

The less "passing" of our group would likely be killed by other inmates. Those of us that do would eventually just end up doing ourselves in due to V-Coding. And because we'd all be seen as men we'd just fall into the broader prison violence statistic. A genocide easily swept under the rug.

Death camps aren't necessary. They’d require too much money and resources for such a small group. All they'd need to do is just make being trans illegal and an arrest able offense. The US prison system as is would do the rest. And if that doesn't send a chill down your spine, it should.

Part of me says read it in a know your enemy sense. But part also says what's the point in reading it when I know it's bad either way.

Uh yeah, it's also a trope about gay men. Or did you miss a massive chunk of the 90s? But regardless you saw a character still be accepted for who they are and thought eh doesn't matter.

You're the one that read malicious intent to trans people specifically in something that could have just as easily been seen as a dig against gay men. But sure go off.

Sure sis, whatever you say. I mean it's totally not like I don't have other things of greater severity to worry about, being black and trans and all than a 20 minute period in movie that came out almost 20 years ago during a time when shit wasn't that great in general.

It was 20 minutes of a movie where trans anything wasn't even the B plot.

The point is that the character's whole arc was that he was supposed to be this stereotypical man's man of a pirate who was afraid to reveal that's not who he was. And realized he didn't have to do any of that. Just because that's what you read into it doesn't change the ultimate message.

There's also the the fact that people who don't interact with this sort of thing but want to be supportive might not have the proper vernacular out of the gate.

Or because that's something pirates are steretypically known to do and he's also trying to adhere to a toxic masculine paradigm. Cause he thinks he has to.

That doesn't change my point.

To be fair by the end of his segment after the MCs encourage him to come out his crew acknowledges that they knew all along about his secret and didn't see it as reason to stop accepting his leadership. It was the 2000s and as nuanced as you were going to get.
