I try to address it from the standpoint of this: If we reduce car dependence and more people use other modes, it can make life much easier for those who legitimately do and always will rely on automobiles. Not only people with disabilities. My brother is a contractor. He will always need to drive.

Most engineers, especially traffic engineers, aren’t safety experts either. Engineers shouldn’t be project managers on transportation projects. Their role should be to make the preferred design technically accurate. But they shouldn’t dictate the components.
