Growing in a curbside pot in Tokyo, pale blue-violet flowers of Apple-of-Peru. It also produces buff-colored seed pods and bright green foliage. In the lower right are bright cherry-red flowers of a begonia plant.

Encountering plants unknown to me while traveling is a such delight.
Here, on a recent trip to Japan, Apple-of-Peru, also known as the shoofly plant. The pods are as lovely as the flowers. 🌱

Sky-blue morning glory flowers, with delicate white centers. Surrounded by lime-green foliage and flowerbuds, the vines will continue blooming through November.

In densely packed Tokyo, very few homes have any back or front yard garden space. But wandering through streets, one finds pots lining the narrow curbs, growing everything from herbs, perennials, shrubs, trees and here, in November, a magnificent morning glory vine growing from a small terracotta planter box.

A rose variety, ‘Peace’. Lushly layered petals in tones of butter-cream, with a pale pink blush. It was developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland, in the years 1935 to 1939. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion, where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war.

Another rose I saw in bloom on a recent trip to Japan. The variety name is ‘Peace’…developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland, in the years 1935 to 1939.
