For the record I can acknowledge the structural, societal, and cultural issues around the objectification of women in media while also sometimes enjoying a titty or two. I'm multifaceted.

The lack of class and taste is really the part that gets me on a personal level. Like I like titties. I like the motorcycle catgirl skin from musedash. I like My Dress Up Darling. I am not an unreasonable man. Ohkubo just has sub-zero taste or sense when it comes to the fanservice.

Also according to my friend who has read the manga: The manga is, in fact, worse than the anime wrt t&a. Just like with SE, the anime toned it down a fair bit even though there's still a bunch of fanservice.

No for sure I'd agree with you. I haven't seen anyone who has watched fire force say its bad bc fanservice. Most of the time I see people share a similar sentiment to me, that being "God this is really good I wish Ohkubo was less of a pervert. Or maybe a pervert with more refined taste."

Ohkubo is really good at writing the most emotionally resonant (lol) thing you've ever read in your life and cramming as much mediocre T&A into it as possible.

TL;DR People should mention the fanservice in soul eater more, but the reason it bothers people so much more in Fire Force is really contextual.

4. I do honestly think people should warn people about the early game Soul Eater fanservice more tbh. I usually tell people to just skip the first three episodes if they can't stomach it!
Some people also just straight up forget its there bc they watched it ages ago.

3.75 Because Fire Force is so good, a lot of people who WOULDN'T watch fanservice anime get turned onto it, and end up slapped in the face with a lot of mediocre, tasteless fanservice.

anime. older anime are just like that" and grit your teeth until it's older. Whereas Fire Force definitely has more of a younger audience who is more used to like, Demonslayer. Haikyuu. Stuff where the fanservice is super minimal, if there at all. It's baby's first female objectification anime.

3. Fire Force is particularly egregious with the fanservice for a modern shonen, vs. Soul Eater which came out 15 years ago.

But then you see fire force, and we get Tamaki, who is unhappy about being groped, and also being groped by people who are unhappy about groping her.
Everyone is uncomfortable, and you are an equally uncomfortable voyeur to everyone being uncomfortable.

2. Most of the most egregious fanservice in Soul Eater is of Blair, who is acting intentionally sexy and seems to aim at being objectified. She likes being a sexy catgirl who presses her boobs on people, she likes being naked, she likes wearing cute sexy outfits.

-- vs. Fireforce where the fanservice is way more chronic, and continues throughout the whole series. It can also interrupt the emotional flow of certain scenes in a way that's jarring or takes you out of it. For a lot of people, it'll feel particularly tasteless.

1. The vast majority of soul eater's fanservice is crammed into the first 3 episodes, and the fanservice outside of that is *incredibly* brief and intermittent. Aside from the first three episodes, I can only think of that one little bit in the Stein fight, and like. Arachne's titty jiggle one time.

SO. I think this kind of comes down to a lot of elements. I haven't read either manga, so I can only attest to the anime, but I think a lot of people are in the same place as me.

You hear about the incredibly gross fanservice in Fire Force and you're like surely it can't possibly be good enough to get past that shit.

But fuck me, it really is that fucking good.

The worst part of Fire Force is that god dammit it is actually really fucking good.

Iris is a hysterically funny character conceptually. I love her.

And the worst part is that is kind of sick. It is kind of sick that you just have a nun in battle praying for you so that the guilt of killing suffering, still partly-conscious human beings doesn't make you crumble.

Anything so you don't have to cover mental health care for your employees.

Like she literally can't do anything to defend herself and they just give her a special fire resistant habit and bring her into active combat zones with explosion risk so she can stand off to the sidelines and pray.

Watching Fire Force recently and I think an underrated hilarious part of the series is that they just have like. a normal nun on the team.

She doesn't fight. Her explicitly stated purpose is to pray so that people don't feel as bad about killing the Infernals since they used to be human.
