“Iran’s Farsnews now confirming what Pezeshkain told Tucker Carlson, that Israelis tried to assassinate him in a meeting of Iran’s SNSC. Pezeshkian was meeting with the heads of judiciary+Majlis- and the building was hit 6 times although he was able to leave minor injuries”

Iran still has ~ 25 operational Tomcats. Old, but still very capable aircraft in long range combat - especially if armed with its Phoenix missiles

Opinion | Graduates speak their minds. Universities freak out. In punishing students who make pro-Palestinian commencement speeches, schools lose their way.

“no university that’s true to its values ought to attempt to censor a student’s remarks, let alone treat extemporaneous speechmaking as a crime…It seems to me proof that the student you’ve chosen is worthy of the honor.” Matt Bai on GW commencement speaker

"Beyond Power Transitions" by David Kang & Xinru Ma. Rather than looking to ancient Greece and seeing a "Thucydides Trap", scholars can look to East Asia and see "Peaceful transitions". Underscores that IR /= European experience.

Like Nixon’s historic overture to China, Trump faces a pivotal moment with the potential to redefine U.S.-Iranian relations and leave a lasting mark on U.S. foreign policy, Sina Azodi writes.

IR Question of the Week: Do values matter in international politics?

I address this question in a new LinkedIN post that draws from my latest World Politics Review piece 👇

The TL,DR: yes, but it's not clear whether they are the BEST way to orient a foreign policy.

Will 2025 Be More Peaceful? The incoming U.S. administration could strike a deal on Ukraine—and possibly start talks with Iran and North Korea—but bickering could derail diplomatic efforts.

Iran’s weakened position and the status of its nuclear option The Israel Defense Forces have seriously undermined Iran’s regional military capabilities, both by attacking the leaders of Hamas and Hizbullah and by launching airstrikes against Iran that damaged its ability to produce missiles. Meanwhile, Iran’s missile salvos against Israel in April and October 2024 revealed the limitations of its missile programme, as most were intercepted or landed off-target.

With their forward defense gone, more Iranians apparently think they now need nuclear weapons. But crossing that line would invite direct attack. An IISS commentary assesses Iran’s no-win strategic posture.

The United States once helped South Korea learn how to be a democracy, although South Koreans did the real work. Today South Korea is returning the favor.
