When January 6th happened, it was crystal clear that MAGA had rejected democracy. It was a full masks off authoritarian move. Yet, we collectively chose to whitewash it 1/x

To understand Trump is to understand he doesn't believe in repeated games where cooperation is the equilibrium strategy because people can punish non-cooperation in the future. He thinks everything is a one off prisoner's dilemma and tries to screw the other party no matter the future consequences.

β€˜You Are All Terrorists’: Four Months in a Salvadoran Prison

40 men Trump sent to CECOT tell the NYT they were beaten, tortured, and sexually assaulted. The details are worse than you can imagine.

We can’t let them get away with this. Miller and the other architects of this sadism need to go to prison.

Trump's tariffs are hurting us in two ways:

First, the obvious: Higher costs β†’ either lower profits or higher prices.

Second, more subtle (perhaps bigger): We’ve signaled we’re an unreliable partner, so allies are reorganizing supply chains to avoid us. That's hard to unwind.

The Mafia Presidency Trump is saying, essentially, If you don’t want to get hurt, you’ll do what I say.

The longevity of the Mafia in Italy serves as a warning that, once this style of rule embeds itself in the state, it is β€œvery difficult to extract,” @adamserwer.bsky.social argues.

The "Mamdani Model" isn't about a specific set of policies. It's about being (a) relentlessly charismatic, energetic, and on message, (b) creating a positive vision not just a critique, and (c) identifying a focused set of issues that connect to the real needs and lived experiences of your voters

The FAA
@FAANewsβ€’ 42m
β€’ β€’ .
Nearly 13, 000 air traffic controllers have been working without pay for weeks, ensuring the safety of more than 50,000 daily operations across the national airspace system (NAS).
As we head into this weekend, a surge in callouts is straining staffing levels at multiple facilities, leading to widespread impacts across the NAS. Currently, half of our Core 30 facilities are experiencing staffing shortages, and nearly 80 percent of air traffic controllers are absent at New York-area facilities.
After 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue.
The shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they've earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays.
As we continue to reiterate, we will never compromise on safety. When staffing shortages occur, the FAA will reduce the flow of air traffic to maintain safety. This may result in delays or cancellations.

If the White House believes nothing can turn off enough of their supportersβ€”why wouldn’t they, since they won on a record of crimes, bigotry, and policy failureβ€”then they’re free to act on their priorities: coddling the president’s feelings and, as @aselrod.bsky.social argues, soliciting bribes.

The Trump White is operating under the assumptions that:

1) They’re above the law
2) Lies, hate, culture war, and media control can overcome anything

If you believe that, and people suffering doesn’t bother you, then starving people while boasting about a new expensive ballroom has no downside.

In this film, Benjamin Martin leads a group of slaves, illiterate farmers, and Frenchmen to violently rebel against a king whose agents were occupying Americans' towns and homes, undermining trade, detaining people without trial and deporting them, and ignoring and undermining legislatures

Contrary to what Steven Miller and Fox say, there is no meaningful opposition to the deportation of persons guilty of violent crimes, or serious crimes in general. The question is short-circuiting legal processes to deport people who have a clean, upstanding record simply because their skin is dark.

Congressional term limits is an idea that briefs well, but falls apart under further investigation.

I wrote this short piece for @oldnorthstpolitics.bsky.social on the folly of term limits a few years ago, and it still holds.

Trump says he’s increasing tariffs on Canada by 10% after Ontario’s Reagan ad | CNN Business President Donald Trump said Saturday he is increasing the tariff on Canada by 10% over current levels, further escalating trade tensions over what he called a β€œfake” ad that featured parts of an anti-...

An embarrassingly obvious point, but...

This. Is. Illegal.

If anything like the rule of law were in force, Trump couldn't arbitrarily increase a tariff because he is annoyed.

In important and increasing ways, the rule of law in the US no longer exists.

I’ve been thinking of Trump’s government as the Regime of Type One Error.

In statistics, Type 1 error is when you get a false positive, or claim to have found a relationship that isn’t really real. It’s like convicting someone who is actually innocent, for example.
