We are seeing motivations for why an Outie would want to be reintegrated…to become a better person.

Natalie is the most tragic. Not only is she a slave, she’s carrying “The Board” as her outie. They can hear and see and feel everything she does. That is why she smiles all of the time.

There is an Underground Railroad trying to free the innies through re-integration. The result of reintegration should be what Kier wanted all along.

Helena’s innie is a fighter. Dylan G is more self assured. Mark is confident and cracks jokes and is happy...

A bad egg Eagen takes over. Somehow someone learns that this other personality is can be isolated into a separate consciousness. Somehow they stumble upon the ability to make one or the other personalities dominant at any given time. Thus severance was born

My ultimate theory based on what’s been shown:

The technology Kier developed was to make people better. Taming the tempers opened up a personality in a person that made them better people. There was no severance, this part was added to a person.

Just a thought: It’s possible her outie is the board. So she has to keep thinking happy thoughts…imagine how horrible that would be.

It would would also mean there is some way for the outies to communicate through their innies…

I think she’s covering her emotions for some reason. Her constant charm might be self defense.
