Do you like attention to detail? So do I!
I'm known as birdiesbindings, but when I reproduce historical pamphlets I use my own historic traders mark based on originals.
The logo and wording all hold a symbolic meaning.

This is cute!

Where do you keep yours?
Tell me you're an #bookbinder without telling me you're a bookbinder! I can't be the only one, right?
I do most of my binding upstairs and the nearest sink is the bathroom!

I've been busy #bookbinding behind the scenes!

A few 'new' pamphlets are on their way!
Perfect for lovers of #history and #reenactors
And. Well. Anyone else really.

Items I bought Saturday! Marbled paper & curved needles.
It was the AGM for my branch of The Society of Bookbinders.
Being a new member, I was excited but extremely nervous.
There was also a show & tell, people selling supplies, & a quiz to round off the day!

How many sketchbooks did this customer commission?!
They requested 2 small, and 1 A5, in my Victorian style covers with 135gsm paper. All were gifts.
I've since been told that the artists are enjoying using them!
Remember to get in touch if you have a commission.

Swans! Who doesn't like swans? Another 1550 pamphlet in progress 😆

I've been hunting down more C16th pamphlets ready for some #tudor reenactment in the summer. I came across this interesting satirical piece...

If you've ever wondered where I do (some) of my living history events and thought 'how can I take part?', then look no further!
It doesn't matter where in the UK, or the world, you are there are all sorts of people who participate.
It really is the best!

The endpapers of a book are just as important as all the other components. And they can be the prettiest too!

I second Bitter Melon Bindery, and also DAS Bookbinding on YouTube.

I hope youre all having a lovely holiday time, and that you've had a chance to rest!
I thought I'd pop on here to show my #bookbinding Christmas gifts I received!
This is an interesting read. I recently came across an uncut book on one of my rebinding commissions.

A gift from me to all my customers and loyal supporters. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! However you celebrate this season, may you have a good one.
And here's to more bookbinding next year 🥂

Let's take a closer look at this. A quick search revealed that this mill burnt down not long after this was made. Yet the letter itself was written on it some years later. Fascinating, huh?
So next time you come across an old document, hold it up to the light to see if you can find a watermark.
I know originally that laid paper (known for its distinctive lines created by the paper mould) were given watermarks depending on the size of the sheet of paper, e.g. crown.
Then, although I'm not sure when, they were given watermarks of the paper mill.
Did you know that laid paper holds a secret?
I was gifted some C19th documents. They're lovely & a glimpse at past lives.
But hold these up to the light & more #history appears!
These are some of the watermarks I came across.

On such a dreary Winter #solstice day, I'm thinking back to the warm days of summer ☀️

I had a lovely weekend in 1869 as part of the #kentwellhall Dickensian Christmas event.
I took a small #bookbinding set up with me to keep me occupied as I interacted with visitors - notebooks make good Christmas presents whatever year it is!

What's your favourite design? New #notebook covers coming in 2026.
I bought a selection of cardstock to make more A6 pamphlet stitched notebooks. There's so many beautiful designs I find it hard to choose a few at a time. These will keep me going for a little while!
