HCC cancels student trip to London, citing fears of Trump immigration crackdown Houston Community College leaders said they nixed a student trip to London after seeing people on visas picked up by immigration agents.

Houston Community College cancelled its yearly study abroad trip.

Instead of 10 days in London, students will spend 4 days in San Antonio.

In a recording I obtained, leaders said they nixed it partly due to fears about the Trump’s recent immigration crackdown.

Why North Forest residents, HCC leaders fought a controversial flood relief plan — and won The move comes after local residents and Houston Community College leaders opposed building a 14-acre stormwater basin on college grounds.

So for now, residents are left to hope the county invests a new fix for their flooding struggles — And that HCC will make the wait worth it, by investing in more growth at the campus.

A good reminder that our colleges touch many aspects of our community.

The county said their hands were tied — there were limited locations in for such a large scale project that didn’t involve home buyouts (far too expensive). It was this land or nothing.

But residents are left without a solution in sight for their persistent flooding.

Residents like Jerome Hewitt —who has replaced drywall, cleared mold and killed insects that filled his home after floods — are exhausted.

“We need some help.”

It’s good news for those who really wanted to preserve HCC’s potential for growth — HCC keeps tons of space to hopefully deliver what they originally promised: a childcare center, fitness rooms, small business incubators, etc at the campus.

On Tuesday, ~3 weeks into my digging into the story, officials @ the flood district called: the deal is off. No major project will move forward in its place.

“Obviously, the community has been very vocal about this… it just wasn’t going to work out.”

But the county’s basin would have absorbed 14 acres of HCC’s land.

Residents said: no way. find an alternative spot.

“I would hate for this campus to turn into a detention pond and limit us on what we can do for future higher education in this area,” Brown said.

The idea wasn’t popular w/ residents. Why?

When the campus opened in 2019, it fell way short of expectations and plans originally made by the college.

But HCC leaders and local politicians assured residents that could change - there was enough land to double the campus!

Harris County Flood Control District has wanted for years to construct a massive stormwater detention basin on HCC’s North Forest campus to reduce flood risk in the surrounding area.

It would have been roughly the size of 11 football fields!
