Today someone asked me what made me “successful.” I realized that that it was because I was an unattractive nerd, who loved to read.
No one offered me drugs.
No one wanted to get me pregnant.
No one derailed me.
I had nerdy friends.
Left to our nerdy devices we went to college where we read books.

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
