(Bonus worldbuilding idea: Evil outsiders also are manipulating mortal markets both to directly cause harm and to alter the prices of their own soul stock market. Think hoarding grain during a famine to make money selling high plus people steal food, which makes your soul portfolio's value swell)

Basically, you don't have to change actual IRL capitalism much at all to turn it into another gear in an engine of eternal torment, just alter the subject slightly.

Every time a mortal baby is born, it's like an IPO on their soul. Fiendish finance bros keep pitching for funding with extensive actuarial calculations speculating about the ultimate fate of individual souls. Venture capitalists flood money to any clever devil with a complicated enough spreadsheet

Enterprising and unscrupulous mortals perform good deeds, then travel to Dis to set up straw purchases of their own soul stock, only to realize that attempting market manipulation is both 1) very evil and 2) incredibly frowned upon by the denizens of Hell

Extra-planar entities shorting souls, swapping soul derivatives, or speculating on soul futures. Baator runs on a debt-based economy. Wizards scry on the Infernal Soul Stock Exchange to see the price of their own soul's stocks.

Worldbuilding idea inspired by @mataramg.itch.io:

The devils learn about market economics and make a soul stock exchange. Imagine, every time someone does a good deed, devils sell shares of their soul. Every evil deed leads to sales.

I think that it would have massive changes to religion and spirituality. "Faith" doesn't meaningfully apply to things you can prove exist, so what beliefs would people create about what happens after the afterlife? Is there yet another realm your soul goes to? Do we become gods ourselves?

The best part about worldbuilding is getting to imagine ways that our own lives could be different.
