I can’t be fired or laid off. But I can be ignored. And so many of us are right now.

As a racial justice educator, I used to be on a college campus once a week. I don’t remember the last campus I was on. my last paid gig was 1+ year ago. I share this because the livelihoods of more than the reported 300,000 Black women are being impacted.

Sinners:

a half formed thought- there was something deeply political for me abt the vampires argument of “freedom, unity + immortality” that they were offering Black folks in the Jim Crow south. And something even more political abt Black folks saying no- determining freedom on their own terms.

Black women told you. We talked abt this. We wrote abt this. We preached abt this. We researched this. We warned abt this. And we were largely ignored.

Don’t make the same mistake twice. Listen to Black women; believe in our assessment of American democracy. Trust we know what we’re talking abt.

I thought I understood the backlash that would result from having a Black President. I now realize severely underestimated it.

I have fallen down a Zora Neale Hurston rabbit hole and I NEED someone to digitize all her films in their entirety. She is one of the earliest black women filmmakers and one of few with footage of Black life in the twenties. Everything is still on reels at the Library of Congress.

I’m honestly a little anxious by what this summer might bring. We are all already so overwhelmed. How many political showdowns will this summer bring?

I kinda feel silly saying this. But it has been warm enough to finally walk outside and I was entranced noticing that the snow/ice was melting closest to the ground first. So many tiny rivers and waterfalls. Made me so happy
