Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for home cooking fires in the U.S., and leaving food unattended is the leading cause. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking accounts for 80% of Thanksgiving Day home fires and 40% of related injuries.

Several people wearing Red Cross vests and jackets are standing on a wet sidewalk at night, engaging in conversation near a storefront with neon signage and a black awning. Additional individuals are gathered in the background, some wrapped in Red Cross blankets. A yellow bicycle is parked on the right side of the image, and the street reflects bright lights from nearby signs and emergency vehicles. The scene suggests an emergency response or relief effort in an urban setting.
Emergency responders and Red Cross workers stand at a city intersection at night, assisting people wrapped in Red Cross blankets. A fire truck with flashing lights is parked in the background near multi-story buildings, and yellow caution tape stretches across the scene. A pedestrian crossing signal is visible in the foreground, and firefighters can be seen further down the street. The ground appears wet, reflecting the bright emergency lights.
Two individuals wrapped in white American Red Cross blankets stand on a wet sidewalk at night in front of a dark storefront with neon signage and a black awning. The blankets have red logos and text printed on them. The entrance door is open, revealing a dimly lit interior. The ground is shiny from rain or water, and broken glass is on the ground.
Last night, our Disaster Action Team responded to a 4-alarm fire on 1st Ave in East Harlem, helping 20 people who were displaced w/ emergency assistance such as temporary lodging and financial assistance.
Big thanks to our volunteers who stepped up to help neighbors in need!

A Red Cross volunteer holds up a thank you card for veterans. She is standing in a street with a Red Cross vehicle behind her and she is wearing a reflective Red Cross vest.
Two people talking in front of the New York Public Library, with others around them and a small public gathering visible in the background. One person is handing a card to the other near a metal barrier.
People in red jackets walking and distributing flyers on a red carpet in a bustling urban street, with a parade revue and buildings in the background.
In celebration of Veterans Day, our SAF volunteers handed out thank you cards to veterans as they walked up 5th Avenue at the nation's largest parade honoring those who have served our nation.
Thanks to everyone who joined us, and to all who served our country in the military.
