I’m sure it depends on the school & the student. Alas, I had some success explaining things along those lines. I’ll take it as a win.

They encounter two types of books in HS: textbooks and novels, which they initially call β€œbooks.” And then a teacher tells them that another word for (this type of) book is novel. What sticks is that any book that isn’t a textbook is novel.
Some students agreed with my theory; the rest was asleep πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
