They encounter two types of books in HS: textbooks and novels, which they initially call “books.” And then a teacher tells them that another word for (this type of) book is novel. What sticks is that any book that isn’t a textbook is novel.
Some students agreed with my theory; the rest was asleep 🤷♀️
