I am not usually moved to tears by music but as Andras Schiff played Bachβs Art of Fugue at yesterday morningβs prom, I dissolved. I was caught up in the music and again and again let my tears fall silently while the music went on. I have never known a concert so wonderful or so moving.
24.08.2025 19:42 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I particularly loved the second half of the first night of the proms: a new composition by Errollyn Wallen followed by a massive Vaughan Williams work of which I was previously unaware.

16.07.2025 13:32 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Bertha Rylandβs damage to property certainly broke the law. Would it also be labelled terrorism if it happened today - and would support for her action and the suffragette campaign send people who merely sympathised to jail?
04.07.2025 08:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A fine poem too.
01.07.2025 20:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My latest cinema visit was to see Kurosawaβs Lear-derived film Ran - nearly three hours long, bloody, spectacular and bleak. Itβs definitely one of the best films I know and, forty years after its first release, seems more relevant than ever.
01.07.2025 11:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβm enjoying the new issue of @magmapoetry.bsky.social which includes poems by friends and introduces me to some very good poets who I hadnβt previously read. I have two poems in it too! Thanks to the editors.
30.06.2025 14:45 β π 5 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0These new Satie recordings sound wonderful but why arenβt they on a cd for old-fashioned people like me? www.theguardian.com/music/2025/j...
26.06.2025 06:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hidden (CachΓ©) is still on until Thursday at Nottinghamβs Broadway Cinema. I first saw it when it came out - perhaps twenty years ago - and, having seen it again, I still think it an outstandingly brilliant and thought-provoking work. Catch it if you can - and if youβre prepared to be disturbed.
24.06.2025 17:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβll keep hoping. Thanks.
21.06.2025 13:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ooh - good to see Stevie Davies there - didnβt know who else read her.
20.06.2025 17:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Is there a waiting list, please, and if so can you please add me?

14.06.2025 12:25 β π 8 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0I chose the Belgian film Julie Keeps Quiet and, at the weekend, the Belgian-Japanese (Studio Ghibli) collaboration, The Red Turtle. Both were good choices.
11.05.2025 17:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My local indie cinema is offering both Holy Cow and Julie Keeps Quiet this week - and I hear good things of both.
05.05.2025 21:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As a frequent cinema-goer, Iβm happy to respond to Trumpβs tariffs by watching only films produced outside the USA. I think I might find a wider variety of films that way.

05.02.2025 19:48 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I expect many people enjoyed your work. Selling depends on people having enough money and a suitable place to display the art.
02.02.2025 12:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Time for reflection. (I have a bad cold.)
02.02.2025 12:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβm sad to feel strengthened in my vote for the Green candidate, even though I was, until recently, a Labour Party member. My mistrust in the party under Keir Starmerβs leadership has been borne out by recent events and policy statements.
