AI – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Part 2 It is going to be a very short post today. We increasingly see that companies like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google are starting to use our personal data and content we create to train generative AI …

We risk a deluge of AI-written β€˜science’ pushing corporate interests – here’s what to do about it We have to tighten up on what research policymakers rely on, and also the inner workings of peer review.

An article describing how AI is changing the scientific publication landscape. A combination of AI writing and predatory publishing leads to a deluge of "resmearch" - or rather "research slop".

Bovine Tb was rampant then and other bacterial diseases.

Souring milk was an alternative.

bTB is back, at least in the UK.

And, quoting from Laura Spinney's Pale Rider:

"...trust is not something that can be built up quickly. If it is not in place when a pandemic declares itself, then however good the information being circulated, it probably won’t be heeded."

It is indeed one of the most important graphs of the 2020s.

Sadly, for their own reasons, politicians missold the vaccination and that created a backlash. We lost people's trust.

This is what I wrote in June 2021:

Defining "succeed" is the key here. It is already an excellent microblogging site, with (so far) largely balanced views, little spam and no ads, and - most importantly - a lot of interesting, dedicated people writing interesting posts.

I now hardly ever read X and find Threads/Instagram unusable.

I love looking at this graph, showing it to my students, and sharing it on social media, even though it unerringly brings out the trolls.

This is the efficacy curve of Pfizer's mRNA COVID vaccine.

This, people, is what ended the emergency phase of the COVID pandemic. Despite what RFK Jr says.

Low sensitivity and specificity are a big problem with AI-powered tools.

The application determines whether such levels can be tolerated. But if it sends the wrong message, better not to implement.
