But if the β€œnumber” of unauthorized immigrants is subject to the whim of the Executive…

- Sir, we β€œcount” 1.8 illegal immigrants in CA.

- What!?! Impossible! Everybody knows they let 6 million illegals voted for Hillary.

- You’re right, sir. There are 6 million. We’ll adjust the census count.

Is this f’ing guy’s high school history teacher hearing this?

If so, he should be retroactively failing that class, causing a cascading loss of high school diploma and and any college degrees this fascist has since obtained.

That’s my dream… you f’ up history this bad, I get to retro-fail you. πŸ—ΊοΈ

That is the β€œbreak glass” problem. Having to undo process that are objectively more democratic than the partisan gerrymanders.

Nazis ruin everything. πŸ˜’

04.08.2025 20:47 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The before-times in CA consisted of a 60/40 partisan split. The CalDems cut decennial deals with the CalReps to lock districts preserving a D majority but giving Rs veto power over the state budget.

When Prop 11 passed… it broke the gerrymander and ironically gave even MORE seats to the Dems πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

04.08.2025 20:46 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Agreed… but I’m also going to be pragmatic at the ballot-box (assuming I still get to use one, and it matters).

Newsom is not the national leader I want for this fight πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

04.08.2025 20:41 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I agree, I’ve been more wrapped up in CA’s potential actions bc it transgresses on what was a move towards a more democratic process (one which the CA Dem Party opposed at the time, btw).

In states who already have partisan gerrymanders, it is less transgressive.

04.08.2025 20:07 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is the way…

β€œWe’re going to break this thing now, but here’s why and here’s what we want to do to prevent this need from ever arising again.”

It creates at least a framework for accountability.

04.08.2025 20:02 β€” πŸ‘ 8    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it’s definitely a more consequential act than many are considering, especially for California with its non-partisan apportionment commission.

But I’m also wondering if we are in a β€œbreak glass in case of fire” moment. Break it now, so we are still around to fix it later. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

04.08.2025 20:01 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

…I think I would vote for this if it showed up in my ballot.

Activists have been screaming for Democratic politicians to DO SOMETHING that matches the urgency of the moment we are in… this would definitely be something.

04.08.2025 19:57 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

…I’m also not sure how a statewide off-year election would play out in CA.

It would be a real test of how well the crisis of democracy is penetrating down to the ordinary (non-activist) voter.

Plus the Democratic Party would still have to win the elections in the redrawn districts πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ …

04.08.2025 19:57 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

…Newsom’s proposal has some guardrails and he is proposing putting it through the initiative/referendum process which is better than legislative fiat (in this scenario). And it doesn’t usurp the restricting commission for 2030.

But once you’re rung this bell… it can be rung again πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈβ€¦

04.08.2025 19:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

…I keep flashing on Luthen Rael’s monologue from Andor 1.10, β€œI’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them.”

Re-introducing a partisan gerrymander back into CA is objectively bad… but so is a fascist take-over of our society, and we are already rolling down that road…

04.08.2025 19:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I appreciate what @jenvictor.bsky.social is arguing here; and I don’t think she’s wrong on most points (see replies).

I am also extremely hesitant about messing what is a good/democratic system in CA.

But I think I’d rather have to fight to fix the system later, than not have a system at all…
