Either way, putting her out there in this moment is a mind-boggling choice.
How far disengaged from reality do you have to be to think, βsure; this still seems like a good ideaβ????
Children⦠Education in Conflict?
And they are going to let her do this?!?!
βMadame chair, how do you think technology helps childrenβs education after their school is blown up during a conflict? And are you wearing your βReally donβt careβ jacket?β
On the rewatch I realized that they were talking about the African Civilization Society, not the America Colonization Society.
The AmCol was founded in 1816 by white abolitionists (with pro-slavery support).
The AfCiv was founded by lack activists Henry Garnet and Martin Delaney in 1858. #HATM
Same! Itβs a great story and they did it justice in the graphic novel. I have high hopes for a movie version.

Yep, my bad... Kentucky it was.
I would have expected Jason to jump all over that mistake! π€ͺ #HATM
This was very fun. Thanks for bringing it together.
I need to rewatch Eps 1 & 2 and then I'll def be watching the rest soon!

Lincoln actually worked hard to keep MD, TN, and MO in the union and they were slave states. He used the army to suborn the elections in TN and locked the MD legislators out of the statehouse so they couldn't meet to vote on secession.
Awkward precedents given our recent timeline π¬ #HATM
Well that is disappointing... says one who loves the La Marseillaise as the antifascist anthem from Casablanca. π #HATM

Would they actually have had a "Stars and Bars" Confed flag on hand the day they voted for seccession?
Kudos for not using the "Southern Cross" battle flag, however. #HATM

"The South is a Lost Cause."
You gonna be right on that, girl! ππ€ͺπ€£

Oof, that's not good.
That's what happened to Sojourner Truth's 1851 "Ain't I a Woman" speech. The abolitionist publishing a version felt that her New York dialect didn't sound "authentic" so they used racialized language coding instead. #HATM
The emphasis on education in the Black community is very real.
The first HBCU was founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia (now Cheney University). Founded with a Quaker bequest, the faculty were all Black from the start. #HATM
The fact that Bell won the border states made total sense. It's as if the voters recognized that when war came, it was coming to them first. The Deep South could afford to vote for the John "Slavery Everywhere" Breckinridge.
They didn't reckon on Sherman π #HATM
Love Hell on Wheels. Great drama and set in a time and place that we don't usually see in media. (post-Civil War middle west, transcontinental railroad) #HATM

Ooo... John Bell shout-out!
Bell was the 4th candidate in the election of 1860. He was part of the newly created Constitutional Union Party... their position on slavery was basically "shhhh, let's not talk about it."
They took TN, KY, and VA. #HATM
Taking the intermission to rec the absolute best show ever made about the lives of the enslaved in the antebellum era:
Underground (2016-2017)
It shows lived experiences in a way that doesn't pull punches but also emphasizes the agency of it's Black protagonists.
It's currently on Hulu.

The American Colonization Society founded in Virginia in 1816. Pro-slavery supporters of ACS saw it as an outlet to minimize the numbers of free Black people living in the South. π
Interesting that there are also some Black advocates of the ACS later on as the only option for freedom. #HATM
The "we're not African" statement is on point for this time, but I'm not sure if the "I'm American" assertion would be common for free Black people of this era. (see F. Douglass & 4th of July speech)
The most common free Black self-identifier from the 1820s to the early 1900s was "colored". #HATM
I am so going to need to rewatch Eps 1 & 2 after #HATM... I'm missing too much detail!
I am liking this more now that we are an hour in... I think it started a bit awkwardly, but it is picking up. Looking forward to Ep 2.
