As human landmarks grew sparser, they camped in the open, near some sluggish river or another. The feral game was less frequent. They resorted to tracking rabbits. A lot of work for stringy, lean, and bad tasting portions, requiring a lot of chewing. There was so little vegetation. Niwa was weary of the dusty, tiny, tough, and bitter leaves she managed to glean from sparse chicory, dandelion, and plantain. She yearned for the shade and protection of trees, for juicy berries of this time of year, for thick greens, tomatoes, squash.

“Grace,” I say, “do you recall Hubert’s assertion that the appearance of an interdimensional entity would require a storm capable of producing-” “A billion volts,” she says, nodding. “I remember.” I begin to pick apart the muffin on my plate, not quite taking a bite yet, excited. “Yes,” I say. “A lightning strike of incredible magnitude—not so strong as to become a ‘superbolt’ and arouse the suspicion of the National Weather Service, but strong enough to alter the-” “I remember,” Grace repeats. No-nonsense. I nod and take a quick bite, barely chewing. “Well,” I continue, my mouth still a bit full. “Chew,” she says. I nod vigorously and clear my throat. “Well,” I begin again. “I asked Hubert to cross-reference major lightning strikes with the map I’ve been putting together.” Grace gives me a gentle look. “Cryptid sightings cover the entire U.S.,” she says. “As does lightning.” “Naturally,” I agree. “But what if you zero in on areas of high recurrence?” I hold a piece of muffin in each hand. “One map pinpointing concentration zones of repetitiously powerful lightning strikes.” I hold up one piece of muffin, as though it were such a map. As an aside, I add, “These tend to be areas along weather ‘belts,’ where air temperatures fluctuate and bring on heavy cloud cover.” I raise my other hand. “And one map where cryptid sightings are particularly frequent, detailed, or otherwise more readily believed. Think Siskiyou National Forest. Think Roswell.”

Another day for our hero arguing with the Paladins.

“Yes, His Majesty was very shy as a child. He found it difficult to speak to others and would frequently doubt himself. In no small part was that due to the fact that the late Queen Siobhan, his sister two years his junior, was blessed with a Sigil where he was not. When it appeared, she was immediately named the previous King’s successor. Under normal circumstances, the oldest child would be allowed to take the throne. His Majesty grew up believing that he was nothing more than a burden to his parents and lived in the shadow of Queen Siobhan. But he began to change–for the better–once he was acquainted with Sir [Blank]. He showed His Majesty companionship in a way he had never experienced before inside the palace. Finally, met with someone he could call an equal, His Majesty began to flourish into the man I know today.” She touches a hand to her mouth. “Of course, both His Majesty and I see very much of Sir [Blank] in you. You share many of his mannerisms, I must say,” Magnus sighs. “And I see some of His Majesty in Sir Wartok. The young man is well-spoken, but quick to put others before himself–even to his own detriment.”

As is so overwhelmingly often the case, that outcome is decided for me. The locks disengage, the wards of the Hawk field power down, and handlers enter. I stop pacing, not meeting their eyes as the prongs of the catchpole click around my collar, but I oblige the initial tug to lead me out of the room. Despite how close [SPOILERS]’s chamber is to the one they’ve chosen for me, they once again lead me all the way back to that same ceremonial chamber. They strip me like before, force-feed me the same drug, recite the same rites, and daub me with the same marks. What takes me off guard though, is the priest behind me emptying an entire ewer of oil over my head, and the others descending on me to work it into my fur even as I bark my protests. Words just don’t come like they used to as the tailored sedative mixing with my matter suspends me in something like disassociation, but I still have my volume. It’s just as futile as ever. The walk back is slippery and undignified, with several near-falls that choke me on the end of the pole by the time we arrive. They let me go outside those massive sliding doors, and lacking the wherewithal to manage so much as a glance at any of them, I enter.

This snippet comes from a tentative draft of a later chapter in book 2, setting the stage for maybe the most outlandishly rancid vibes in the whole series.
