At the end of the sixteenth century, David Vinckboons moved from Flanders to Amsterdam, where he introduced the theme of the country fair to Holland. Vinckboonsβ peasants and their humble pleasures were a source of amusement to collectors from the bourgeoisie.

11.11.2025 18:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Troost painted various scenes from the popular play βJan Claasz or the Supposed Servant Girlβ. The playβs finale is an accumulation of farcical situations. Saartje is on the verge of marrying the boring Reinier. What no-one knows is that she is secretly in love with Jan Claasz. In order to prevent the wedding, the couple have hatched a plot: disguised as a servant girl, Saartjeβs lover creeps into her bed at night. On the morning of the wedding, Saartjeβs parents discover the deceit and fly into a rage. To save the situation, Saatje pretends to faint, whereupon her parents agree to a marriage between Saartje and Jan Claaz. Allβs well that ends well.

11.11.2025 13:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Jane Seymour was the third wife of the English king Henry VIII. Her expensive clothing is embroidered in gold thread, and she is wearing a string of pearls and a pendant of precious stones around her neck. Jane was Henryβs favourite wife. She gave him his long-awaited male heir to the throne, although she died in childbirth. The court painter Hans Holbein painted several portraits of Jane Seymour, which his pupils copied. But this painting is so good that it may have been painted by Holbein himself.

11.11.2025 12:14 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Ter Borch became famous for his intimate scenes of people engrossed in what they are doing, often unaware of our presence. He also had an exceptional talent for depicting different materials, like the gleaming satin of the girlβs dress. Here, we see a soldier receiving a letter from a messenger. Itβs easy to imagine that the letter is a call to the front, away from the girl who leans against him so lovingly.

11.11.2025 09:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Salomon van Ruysdael was the leading painter of Dutch water landscapes. In this fresh breezy picture, the emphasis is all on the clouds and the water. Beneath an impressive cloudy sky, some small boats sail into the distance with billowing sails. In this way, Van Ruysdael created a great sense of space on a small surface. He worked very efficiently and left the brown base bare in several places, making it part of the picture. The water is a good example of this.

He is accompanied on the hurdy-gurdy by the boy in the red jacket. Both young and old are enjoying the music. The Haarlem artist Adriaen van Ostade painted a great many merry companies of peasants and country folk. He was an example to Jan Steen, and may even have been his master.

10.11.2025 10:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Here, Ter Brugghen has painted the biblical story of St Peterβs liberation from prison. The angel is waking him and pointing upwards, as if to say that God has sent him. St Peter looks alarmed and folds his chained hands. Ter Brugghen created a very powerful painting with strong contrasts between light and dark, and expressive facial expressions. He also showed the two figures very close up. Ter Brugghen had copied this style from the Italian painter Caravaggio, whose work he had seen in Rome.

The Amsterdam artist Pieter Codde is one of the painters who specialised in this genre. In this merry company, people are eating, drinking and making music. 09.11.2025 13:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One of Jan Steenβs favourite subjects was the doctorβs visit, or the sick girl. It is a humorous theme that was perfectly suited to Steenβs style. A languishing young girl is being examined by the doctor. He is being fooled, as the girl is pretending to suffer from a βwandering wombβ, a condition that was taken very seriously by doctors in those days. The only remedy was for the patient to sleep with her lover. And that is exactly what this girl intends to do.

09.11.2025 10:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This painting of a colourful bouquet of thirty types of flowers is a masterly work by Ambrosius Bosschaert. He depicted the flowers meticulously, so that each one is easily recognisable. This painting provides an overview of the most beautiful flowers known to Bosschaert, including the tulip, which was still a rarity in Holland at the time. Bosschaert based his bouquet on separate sketches he had made throughout the year. This allowed him to compose a bouquet of flowers that in real life do not bloom at the same time.

09.11.2025 09:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This subtle still-life is unique in the oeuvre of Pieter van Anraadt, as all of his other known works are mediocre portraits. He was just a beginner when he made this painting. Nevertheless, he did an amazing job of depicting the various materials: the earthenware jug, the coal pan, the glass of dark ale and the dish of tobacco and stone pipes. The soft light entering from the left is reflected by each object in its own particular way.

07.11.2025 17:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cornelis Troost was the leading Dutch painter of the eighteenth century. He had a theatrical background and painted narrative scenes filled with humorous details. Here we see a group of people going from house to house as they celebrate Epiphany, known in the Netherlands as Driekoningen (Three Kings). The revellers, who are dressed as the Three Kings of the Christmas story, sing traditional songs and carry a star-shaped lantern. Mothers have come out of their houses with their children to wonder at the gleaming light emanating from the star. Troost often worked with gouache (opaque watercolour with gum arabic) and pastel (soft chalk), a technique that was particularly popular in the eighteenth century.
