It’s #MEAwarenessDay and as always, I’m thinking about how much we have to limit ourselves with this condition. So I wrote a poem about the forced absence of joy:

I have never felt threatened as a woman by trans, non-binary or intersex folk.

We are in this together. I am so very glad you exist. You matter and you mean so much to me.

I’m so sorry you are up against so much for simply wanting to exist as who you are.

Love working on projects that are a reminder of our worth when society tries to tell us we’re less-than.

#DisabledJoy in the form of bright expletive-filled postcards? I’m in!

Every time I open my phone there’s another dangerous narrative or misinformation to counteract.

But there’s also people coming together. Friends being made. Solidarity. Push back.

Community matters. I’m grateful to share space with so many of you.

We keep going, I guess.

I want a society where everyone is cared for. You don’t get that by cutting support to those that need it most.

Literal billionaires exist. Tax dodging multi-millionaires exist.

Leave us alone.

For when the world feels heavy and it all gets a bit much, I focus on the Small Joys, and remember that I’ve got people to prove wrong.

It’s as simple, and as complex, as that.

Do people post videos here? I dunno, I’m new!

But other platforms are squashing this (wonder why! 🥴) so I figured here was worth a shot.

Some reminders in the form of fit checks:

Latest #ChronicIllness poem is up on the blog 💛

‘My wish list is dusty, It sits in a pile.
It’s not been forgotten, It’s just been a while.

Can’t throw it out, So it sits on the shelf. Along with those things, That made up myself.’

Yellow background with cream handwritten text that reads ‘to need each other is natural’

Hi, hello, just me checking in to remind you it’s not a failure to need people.

Almost every sick and/or disabled person I know has been made to feel guilt or shame for that at some point or another.

You’re not too much. You matter.

I can’t promise how much I’ll be on here. Adding more social media platforms is tricky with #CognitiveDysfunction and #ChronicFatigue but I’ll try my best! Being able to find community online is one of my favourite things. Here’s to those being loud about what matters 💛

I’m higher risk for covid, still shielding and encouraging others to take precautions. I talk about covid all the time and people get really annoyed at me for it. I think they thought I’d be quiet eventually, and yet here we are 5 years in #CovidIsntOver

I run a small business from my bed, working as a designer/consultant (predominantly) for disability orgs, and I run a webshop where I sell stuff like this: shopthisthingtheycallrecovery.com I like to call it nice stuff for hard times. Who says illness related stuff has to be clinical all the time?!

Blog | This Thing They Call Recovery A range of blogposts highlighting life with disability, chronic illness and neurodiversity. All from personal lived experience.

I started writing a blog all about my experience with chronic illness about 8(?) years ago. Time is an abstract concept to me now, it’s been ages anyway. It’s changed a bit over the years but I still write on it: www.thisthingtheycallrecovery.com/blog It’s mostly poems these days.
