The cost of holding down ACA premiums for a year is less than this…

No Kings As the president escalates his authoritarian power grab, the NO KINGS non-violent movement continues to rise stronger. We are united once again to remind the world: America has No Kings and the power belongs to the people.

Calling all scientists and science supporters! You can help make Saturday's No Kings the biggest day of protest in modern American history. Find an event near you and raise your voice for the facts, evidence, and truth we need to protect our democracy. #NoKings

Scientists seek to turbocharge a natural process that cools the Earth β€” The Washington Post Terradot, a carbon removal company, is using β€œenhanced rock weathering” to sequester carbon by spreading crushed volcanic rock over farmland.

Maybe crushed rock will pull carbon from the air. Maybe it’ll poison the soil, the lungs, or both. Desperation is being cloaked as β€œclimate innovation.” Hubris and haste are starting to rhyme.

A preliminary injunction hearing may follow later this month and the facts on the ground matter.

If a right wing influencer with a camera is trying to goad you into a fight, there is a reason for that, and the reason is we could lose our legal standing to stop the feds from coming in.

NASA missions at risk under the Trump administration The Trump administration has proposed cancelling more than 40 NASA missions, including at least 14 Earth science missions.

In the budget proposal for NASA submitted earlier this year, the Trump admin proposed cancelling more than 40 missions, including 14 Earth science missions.

Agency employees have already been instructed to do the preparatory work for ending these satellite and instrument programs

As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway

I’m not an expert here but I’d be curious about what recycling at scale is? It shouldn’t just mean shredding factory scraps. I feel like Redwood was born where, real scale = taking old EV packs, refining them back into new battery-grade materials, and selling those in a true circular recycling.

I’d ask if they can actually recycle a battery yet? It’s good that they are extending the battery life for a second purpose, but billions has been invested for the purpose to recycle a battery. Where are they at on that?

More importantly what is the stronger lever to reduce emissions from ammonia production!? REDUCE THE EXCESSIVE NITROGEN APPLICATIONS! Each lb of N you don’t apply avoids two things at once:

1. the soil Nβ‚‚O from that lb of fertilizer

2. the factory COβ‚‚ from not making it.

The IEA recommends direct electrification wherever feasible. Until, wherever these green ammonia plants are sited have sustained excess energy, it would be a bad choice and likely lead to increased GHG emissions due to opportunity costs

24.09.2025 00:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Because of the extra conversion steps using what is *currently* insufficient clean electricity (about to get worse with all the data centers coming online), you get less bang for your dollar/energy to put renewables towards β€œgreen” ammonia compared to directly electrifying cars and heat pumps.

24.09.2025 00:35 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

There are other more energy requirements for the β€œgreen” approach (i.e., a little more drying and compression needed) but this is about a few more percent loss of energy. But the splitting of water is the biggest increase of energy needed to create ammonia compared to current methods.

24.09.2025 00:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

β€œGreen” ammonia usually needs more total energy than gas-based ammonia. Fossil gas supplies both hydrogen atoms and heat. Whereas β€œgreen” route you must first split water with electricity, then run Haber-Bosch. Splitting water is like prying apart super strong magnets, it takes a lot of energy!

24.09.2025 00:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

First, β€œgreen” ammonia will be notoriously difficult to prove in the short term (additional renewable power, directly sourced from nearby grid, production match 100% of renewable consumption hourly.

24.09.2025 00:08 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

While, eventually the U.S. should shift to β€œgreen” ammonia for fertilizer production, it should not be viewed as a strong strategy in the near term.

Commercially available sensing technology to detect small parts per billion leaks are unavailable at this time which is needed to detect and quantify climate impacts. A 2024 U.S. DOE report notes most commercial β€œsafety” sensors bottom out at parts per million and that barriers exist for ppb sensors

23.09.2025 21:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Second, hydrogen gas is the smallest (size/weight) molecule in the universe. Preventing leakage across any sector in everyday use will be impossible. The question becomes how much? And what government body and third party verifications will we trust to ensure leakage remains near 0 to avoid warming?
