The website is not the same group of brethren. It is very complex! The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is the most exclusive and strict and probably the most harmful.

This speaks to a particular mindset, which believes empathy and caring to be weaknesses. The belief is that if you are empathetic and if you care about others, then you are a doormat who won't argue, who won't display anger, who won't fight back. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of empathy.
