Kinda weird that the party that controls the House, the Senate, and the White House claims there's rampant voter fraud.

Here's a lovely article about the people who risked their careers to put a gay couple on Barney Miller back in the 1970s. (With excellent quotes from @stevencapsuto.bsky.social & a link to my video on the topic.) Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/11/04/a...

A disturbingly high percentage of my fellow Jews seem to believe every wild conspiracy theory about Mamdani that comes down the pike. I was blissfully unaware of this until about two weeks ago, since those aren't the types of Jewish circles I usually move in.

How the Cop Show β€˜Barney Miller’ Made Gay TV History, 50 Years Ago

Woohoo!

I'm quoted in today's NY Times piece about the 50th anniversary of the gay couple on the 1970s-80s sitcom BARNEY MILLER: Darryl and Marty.

Funding cuts and political pressure drive US researchers overseas The exodus is largely driven by abrupt federal funding withdrawals and project cancellations. Last month, over 200 grants supporting HIV and AIDS research were terminated. The National...

From earlier this year, see, for instance:
www.techspot.com/news/107679-...

But also the anecdotal evidence is overwhelming: Anyone with connections to the research community knows lots of people whose projects, already approved, have been eliminated and who are scrambling to find positions abroad.

It's not just skilled migrants who are going elsewhere in significant numbers. It's skilled Americans, too. The "brain drains" that the US benefited from in the 20th century are now happening in reverse, as brilliant minds move to countries that are more stable and have decent research funding.

I just double-checked this in my book. It turns out I didn't use Olson's real name in the body of the book (since he was still alive when I wrote the first edition), but for the revised edition, I linked the two names in the subject index.

The video starts with the October 31 episode (42 years ago today), in which Lynn answers questions about lesbianism from her straight best friend, who she just came out to.

If I recall right, Jim couldn't come up with Dale's name during the interview, but he said it was the former Mattachine board member who later went into public relations and who, in the mid 1980s, acted as a spokesperson for Rock Hudson during his illness. And that's definitely Dale Olson.

31.10.2025 22:55 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's the only interview for my book that I didn't record. I phoned Jim to schedule an interview, and he said "Let's do it now" and talked for (I think) an hour. I didn't have time to hook up the recorder, so I took it all down in shorthand and then typed it up. It's probably at the Wilcox Archives.

You can cite my book "Alternate Channels." The account of Olson's appearance on "Confidential File" is on pages 22-23 of the revised (2020) edition. The information source (my 1991 oral history interview with Jim Kepner) is cited in the endnotes, on page 496.

I got that from Jim Kepner, who knew Dale Olson, when I interviewed Jim in 1991. His recollections of 1950s-60s gay organizing in Southern California were stunningly accurate. Off the top of his head, he remembered what happened when to within a week or two (everything I checked did check out).

Yes, it's definitely Dale Olson who appeared on Paul Coates' TV show in 1954. I've got a transcript of the show somewhere (unless I donated it to the Wilcox LGBTQ Archive in Philadelphia... which is very likely). But I've never been able to find a recording of it, other than that short audio clip.

Could people please stop using the word "divisive" as a euphemism for "recycled KKK rhetoric?" It is such a moral abdication.

In the days after Charlie Kirk's death, half the internet sounds like that awful guy at the office who keeps going up to women coworkers and saying, "What are you talking about? Bob's a great guy! *I've* never heard him harass anyone!" #CreepyAssholes

(Watches British TV shows on PBS.) So... Is advanced criminology actually taught in Christian seminaries in the UK? Or is solving murders just something that all British clergy do as a hobby?

I didn't read the display cards, but I think some of them belonged to well-known authors. And one, unsurprisingly, belonged to Aaron Lansky.

If you're rounding up people who "look Hispanic," what you really mean is they look like indigenous peoples of the Americas. This is white leaders ordering the roundup and imprisonment of indigenous Americans, to punish them for being on the wrong side of lines that white people drew on the ground.

An illustration of a young girl in silhouette with a ponytail, standing against a fiery orange and red background. Over her figure is a handwritten quote in white text that reads: β€œThe wicked become even worse when they are tolerated.” – Tolstoy. The intense backdrop and the child's silhouette create a haunting, powerful visual emphasizing the quote's message about the dangers of complacency toward evil.
